A government watchdog group is urging lawmakers to crack down on foreign money flowing into U.S. nonprofits that influence American politics and public policy, according to letters exclusively obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Americans for Public Trust (APT) is sending letters to all 50 governors and officials on six congressional committees directing them to its newly launched FollowForeignMoney.org database, which has cataloged a running total of more than $5 billion flowing from foreign governments, foreign nationals and foreign charities into U.S.-based nonprofits .... The group is calling on state and federal officials to examine whether existing laws adequately prevent foreign actors from indirectly influencing political outcomes.
“The information is available. The threat is real,” APT Executive Director Caitlin Sutherland wrote in the letters.
Federal law broadly prohibits foreign nationals from making contributions, donations, expenditures and disbursements in connection with U.S. elections, but foreign money can still finance certain activities through tax-exempt organizations, advocacy groups, voter registration efforts and other channels, according to APT.

The foreign money comes from a collection of overseas foundations and foreign-linked philanthropic networks. An earlier APT analysis identified six major sources that it said had collectively directed more than $2.65 billion into U.S. advocacy groups.
Hansjörg Wyss is a Swiss billionaire who uses his massive wealth to fund liberal and progressive advocacy groups in the United States. Nonprofits associated with Wyss accounted for approximately $673 million, according to APT.
His Wyss Foundation, a private charitable foundation, and Berger Action Fund, a nonprofit advocacy group, have directed more than $372 million into nonprofits associated with the Arabella Advisors network, a group of major liberal nonprofit funding vehicles, including nearly $305 million from Berger Action Fund to the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a liberal nonprofit dark money group, according to APT’s database.

Wyss has a connection to the Nature Conservancy. I’ve watched this bunch for 35 years or more buying up land in Ohio. They are also connected to the Ohio Department of Natural resources. Every stream and river in Ohio have been in their sights for years and with the help of the ODNR now have control of lands near them. The ODNR has been quietly no longer leasing lands to farmers and turning those same lands near wildlife areas into giant brush fields. Shades of Maui wildfires...
The ODNR tried this in my own county with a scenic river designation and the Nature Conservancy was to be “stewards” in control of lands a 1000 ft on each side of the creek. Think about that, 333 yards on each side of many streams and rivers in Ohio.
