Twisted Killer Took my Best Friend and Mentor. Now Gavin Newsom’s Parole Disgrace May Set Him Free

A man who killed two rescue workers in a head-on DUI collusion is about to be paroled from prison after serving less than half his sentence — unless Governor Gavin Newsom steps in to stop it.

I was in the rescue vehicle that day, and I barely survived. I’m speaking out because my colleagues can’t.

On July 17, 2004, the San Gorgonio Search and Rescue Team was en route to search for a missing 17-year-old male in Joshua Tree.

A driver, Joseph Tidwell, 35, was under the influence of methamphetamine when he passed out, crossed the center line, and struck our rescue vehicle head-on.

Team members Doctor Jim Evans (Doc) and Julie Haggerty were following us, and immediately responded. Doc could see that team member Scott Johnston was the most seriously injured. Scott was my best friend. I watched helplessly, trapped in the back seat, as Doc performed CPR. But after a few minutes, Doc realized Scott was gone.

That law is ridiculous. A person is not “elderly” at 55. I’d make it 75 at the very least. I’m sure they want to get rid of old prisoners because they probably start to cost too much in health expenses, but too bad.

What then is the point of having sentences , juries, judges? Especially in wrongful death cases or horrific crimes. So easily verdicts can be changed and those guilty get out, likely to reoffend.

And I agree, if such an elder release law, make it 75 or 80, not middle aged 50s.

I’ve often thought assisted suicide for those with long prison sentences for horrific crimes would be a a better solution than parole. Some people should not be allowed to continue to threaten public safety.

I think the poster who said health care costs are driving this is correct. It transfers the cost from the state prison system to Medicaid or Medicare. Criminal law looses deterent effect if you know you will get out when youo still have a 30 year life expectancy.
