Iran claims that three of its pilots who disappeared after their aircraft were shot down during the war nearly six months ago are alive and being held by Qatar, prompting Tehran to call for international intervention and their immediate release. According to reports published Saturday, a senior Iranian armed forces official said the three pilots were captured by Qatari forces after the Su-24 aircraft they were flying were shot down during fighting in March.
The claim represents a dramatic change in Iran’s account of the pilots’ fate. For months, Tehran said it did not know what had happened to the aircrew. Iran now says it has information indicating that the three survived the shootdown and were taken into Qatari custody. Lt. Col. Mohammad Bakarzadeh, who heads an Iranian committee tasked with locating missing personnel, reportedly appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene. Iran is seeking access to the pilots and is calling for efforts to secure their release.
The incident dates back to March, when two Iranian Su-24 bombers reportedly flew toward Qatar. Reports at the time said their intended target was Al Udeid Air Base, which hosts American forces. Qatar said its forces shot down both Iranian aircraft.

Strange that they havent used to phone their government to rescue them from relatively comfortable accommodations.
“…reportedly appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross…”
Red Crescent not using to it?
Possible defections from the IRGC? If not, how did Iran’s supposedly obliterated air force manage to get 50 year old bombers into the air? Have the cease fires allowed Iran to re-arm? Has Iran gotten outside help? Both?
Why would they get released? They were flying illegally into another nations’ airspace.
Exactly, they don’t want to go back!
Note to self, Read the article completely to understand the time lines before posting.
I believe there’s hidden story to this...
The pilots were not shot down; they defected with their aircraft intact, and they and Qatar agreed to the made up story that they were shot down.
Iran wants them back to punish them (murder them), not to repatriate them and parade them as heroes.
On the other had, if it’s true that those pilots want to return home, it just means that they are actually prisoners of war and won’t be returned until the war is over, meaning NEVER.
That didn’t stop Rudolf Hess.
Huh? Hess was arrested and later convicted.
But he did invite himself into Scotland, purportedly to negotiate peace with England, and they arrested his sorry a@@.
If it’s 3 of them it’s gotta be more than one plane right? It would mean they had to conspire to defect. Trust issues. If the choice is to trust the next guy or get blown out of the air I’d chicken out.
Would Iran offer any captured allied pilot back?
