Italy Rejects Spain's Ultimatum as Border Controls Remain in Place

The Meloni government responded to Madrid in a written statement, declaring that Italy will not accept external pressure or ultimatums when it comes to national security and border controls.

"Italy does not accept impositions from abroad or ultimatums" concerning national security and border control, the government said.

Rome also made clear that it has no intention of reconsidering its decision to temporarily suspend the application of the Schengen Agreement for third-country nationals arriving from Spain, at least until August 15.

The Italian government said it would maintain the measures until authorities rule out potential terrorism-related and other security risks to Italy.

It also pointed to developments expected in Ceuta on August 15, noting that Spanish authorities themselves have warned of a new wave of migration on that date.

Unless France does the same thing...not sure what good this does. Terrorists don’t generally bring all their bombs on the plane, they most likely will travel via ground. So they will just drive in from France where it’s an open border to Italy.

What good it does? It keeps a trickle from being a flood.

If there's one thing the french are good at, it's hosting an invasion.

True that. But unfortunately, a trickle will sink a ship as surely as a gaping hole will. It just takes longer.

As you’ll probably agree, it will take border controls *and* deportations to save Europe now. I don’t think Europe has near the stomach for the latter.

So bye, Europe.
🙁

Unless France does the same thing...

~~~
Yeah, once you are past customs in Europe, can’t you travel freely across borders without papers?
How so? They have no border checks. The only way to do what they want is via air travel. The flood will come across the border not via a plane.
Meloni isn’t the only leader to figure that out. Next, she needs to figure out that Italy, Greece, and the other victims of EU open borders need to exit the EU, but it’ll have to be done carefully because of prospects like this:
Depends what you mean about border checks. I recall having my passport checked when a train left France for Italy. But that was a few decades ago.
Yep that no longer happens. It’s one big open border once you’re inside.
