Sadiq Khan calls on Andy Burnham to commit to climate action as pressure grows over North Sea oil

Sadiq Khan has called on the government to commit to revamped climate action and to reduce the UK’s reliance on oil and gas, as the UK endures a summer of drought, wildfires and heatwaves.

Writing in the Guardian, the mayor of London said that Andy Burnham’s administration must reaffirm its commitment to net zero and make clear it will continue to reduce the UK’s reliance on oil and gas “to get Britain back on track.”

There is growing concern among Labour MPs and climate experts that the new prime minister may support renewed drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea; since arriving in No 10, Burnham has remained largely tight-lipped on climate and environmental concerns despite speaking out about them during his time as mayor of Greater Manchester.

Last month, Burnham said he would be “pragmatic” about oil and gas and that decisions on new drilling would be made “in due course”. “The question isn’t whether Britain will still be using oil and gas, the question is where does it come from,” he said.

Khan writes that, faced with the realities of a rapidly worsening climate crisis, which has amplified heatwaves and droughts sweeping across the UK and Europe, governments must redouble their efforts.

“National governments across the globe must step up and meet the gravity of this moment with renewed focus, funding, and resolve,” said Khan.

A decision on whether to approve more drilling in the North Sea is expected in the coming weeks. The Labour manifesto committed the party to halting any new licences. Two projects – the Jackdaw gasfield and the Rosebank oilfield – were granted permission under the Conservatives, but operations were paused after a court challenge by environmental groups.

Britain’s choices?
1) Pump North Sea Oil
2) Buy from Saudi Arabia, the US, Venezuela. This is good for the exporter, but tends to increase the global price.
3) Switch to nuclear...out-do France on nuclear. But in Britain nuclear is ideologically a political loser, as it is in the US.
4) Revert to the Stone Age. Export the intelligent people in the population to countries with a future, and thus increase the downward spiral.

Nuke London. It’s the only way to save Britain.

I suggest the intelligent people will leave on their own, no need to export.

in Britain nuclear is ideologically a political loser, as it is in the US

Nuclear should not be a political loser. It can be much less expensive than wind, solar and even coal and oil. The US will be set for a long time as it might rely on oil, but as localities see the high reliability and safety of recent variants of nuclear that are coming on line and will continue to do so in the next 4-8 years, I believe nuclear will become the preferred source.

Nuclear's reputation will be rehabilitated in the next 3-5 years and US manufacturers will score big wins via increased deliveries of their safe reactor systems throughout the world.

Moslems in office don’t give a happy damn about Climate Change or about anything else except as it breaks down the culture and the economy and makes institution of Moslem Sharia rule more imminent.

Sadiq Khan calls on Andy Burnham to commit to remaining firmly under the thumb of his NWO Davos sycophants.

Translation: Refrain from restoring the UK to an independent sovereign kingdom outside the control of the WEF and its anti-Christ masters.

Whether or not nuclear is a political loser in the UK (it isn’t), one large new nuclear plant (Hinkley C) is well advanced in construction, another (Sizewell) is about to start, and Rolls Royce have won the contract to build a series of mini-nukes, the first at Wylfa in north Wales.
