SpaceX and Tesla choose Texas for AI chip manufacturing plant that will be world's largest building

Terafab Texas will produce chips for Optimus robots, self-driving Cybercabs and space-based data centers

SpaceX announced this week that its planned semiconductor plant that is expected to become the largest building in the world at more than 100 million square feet will be built in Grimes, Texas, outside of Houston.

"Terafab Texas will be the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far," owner Elon Musk wrote X Thursday. "And it will be stunningly beautiful."

The factory is a joint effort with Musk’s electric car company, Tesla.

"This facility will house the manufacturing, packaging and testing of advanced logic and memory devices," SpaceX said in a press release Thursday. "Terafab will produce chips optimized for edge computing and inference for use in hardware like Tesla’s Optimus robots and self-driving Cybercabs, along with high-power chips designed for operating SpaceX’s space-based data centers."

SpaceX added that its and Tesla’s combined demand for chips is expected to be in excess of the global supply.

"While we are deeply appreciative of our current chip suppliers and encourage them to expand production whenever possible, this looming gulf between supply and demand is at the core of Terafab’s necessity," SpaceX explained.

The company said Terafab would employ more than 3,000 people, adding that its initial phase is estimated to cost approximately $16.8 billion.

"The Terafab is bringing cutting-edge manufacturing to America, creating thousands of high-paying jobs in the Lone Star State and enabling us to produce AI chips at scale for use on Earth and in space," Musk said.

SpaceX proposed initially investing $55 billion into Terafab, which could increase to $119 billion, according to a May filing.

In April, Tesla broke ground on a research facility at the North Campus of its Giga Texas plant, which it called a precursor to Terafab.

The Pentagon is the current largest building in the U.S. at 6.6. million square feet, and China’s New Century Global Center in Chengdu, is the world's largest at 18.9 million square feet.

The Natural Gas Companies are loving this project as they will supply to gas to create the electricity needed to cool this building in Houston Texas summer heat.

A building 100,000,000 square feet in size is 10,000x10,000 - almost two miles square! That’s a BIG building ...

Elon Musk is amazing, I hope I am still around in 20 years to see how things turn out. Hopefully the DemoMarxist party and RINOs get their act together before we are taken over by Islamo Nazis, just boggles my mind 25 years after 911 we got Islamo Nazis winning primaries and being voted into office. To think in New York city of all places they elected one as Mayor! What-the-hell??

It’s hard to imagine, I just hope the midterms and 2028 goes good otherwise the domestic enemies could/would stop all of this.

Looks like Elon is on his way to making his second trillion. Good for him. He made a bunch of his employees millions. How many of the wealthiest have done that?

If his pickup truck is any indication, I'll wait before I make that judgment.

I love all this Texas stuff, Texas is more than just a state, it’s confidence, positive attitude, and and natural patriotism rubs off on people, as we saw with the soccer thing, it shows that loving America and being proud of who we are as a people is good and wholesome and a feeling to keep alive and enjoy rather than suppress.

Being exposed to Texas makes many people carriers and the more stature it gains, the more counterweight it is to California, in fact I sense that Texas is already in the early stages of replacing California as the culture dominating state.

Technically, it is Grimes County. Northwest of Houston.

I eagerly await the day that Elon realizes that he can purchase California for a few bucks, after which he will kick out the riff-raff (sometimes knowns as DemocRATz) and return the state to greatness. As for the RATz, well, there’s always Muslim countries, Commie countries, and such where they can share life with the failed cultures that they worship.

“If his pickup truck is any indication”

They can’t all be home runs my friend.

If you look back, every visionary in history laid an egg occasionally.

It’s the only way to determine what works and what doesn’t.

Having said that, I agree the cyber truck is hideous but I sure see a lot of ‘em running around where I am. 🤷‍♂️

“It’s hard to imagine, I just hope the midterms and 2028 goes good otherwise the domestic enemies could/would stop all of this.”

I live in a blue area. Many of my family members are hardcore Dems who can’t or won’t acknowledge that the new crop of Dems are communists. Given the gains of the communists, and the acceptance of communism and anti Americanism in the mainstream culture, I’m not optimistic.

Just the fact that Hasan Piker has a platform is enough to make me vomit.

The company said Terafab would employ more than 3,000 people

And to think California let all those jobs and tax revenue flee to Texas.

Sawyer Merritt:

I don't think most people understand the massive scale of investment Tesla & SpaceX are making in Texas right now.

Everything the two companies are/going to build across the state:
• Terafab (Grimes County)
• Gigasat factory (in Bastrop, currently under construction)
• Optimus factory (at Giga Texas, currently under construction)
• Advanced technology fab (at Giga Texas, currently under construction)
• Tesla Project Crystal Sun (big solar cell plant in Fort Bend County. Late 2026 construction start date)
• Expanded Starlink terminal production facility (in Bastrop, currently under construction)
• Further Starbase expansion (in Starbase)
• Tesla Megafactory 3 (in Brookshire, just started prod)

Brilliant move, having a dedicated chip plant geared towards space hardened components will save time and money allowing much faster manufacturing of hardware.

By my calculations, 3.67 square miles.

That is a big building!

If the government goes Communist in the future, it’ll be time for Texas to exit the union any way it can.

would be nice if he stopped replacing American workers with cheap H-1B visa holders, but agree with the rest of your point.
