L.A. shelter provider has paid CEO who lives in Hawaii $1.6 million in salary, vacation over two years

A Southern California nonprofit that runs domestic violence shelters has paid its longtime chief executive officer, a Hawaii resident, more than $1.6 million in salary and vacation over two years — far more than local peers. Experts in nonprofit oversight say 1736 Family Crisis Center CEO Carol Adelkoff’s out-of-state residency and compensation raise questions about board governance and ‘reasonable’ pay. Adelkoff said her compensation grew significantly over the last couple of years because she was paid unused vacation time that had accrued over the 40 years she has worked at the nonprofit. As public spending on homelessness has come under increasing scrutiny, a nonprofit that runs domestic violence shelters in Southern California has paid its CEO, who lives in Hawaii, more than $1.6 million in salary, vacation pay and other compensation for the last two years of tax filings, a sum that is several times larger than the compensation of executives running similar organizations.

In the nonprofit’s 2024 tax form, the latest to be made public, Carol Adelkoff, the chief executive officer of 1736 Family Crisis Center, earned $742,181.

“Non-profit” often means no-taxable profit, and nothing more.

Many “non-profits” mean large saleries with little effort for some executives.

“Non-profit” has become a wonderful scam, if you can figure out how to use it...

“because she was paid unused vacation time that had accrued over the 40”

Most for profit businesses require one to take their vacations, use or lose it. Meanwhile, if she is employed in Ca but lives in
Hi, sounds to me she is on permanent vacation.

They produce nothing, solve no problems, and create nothing except waste and fraud. How else are Democrats supposed to get rich?

My wife worked for a 501c3 organization. They never made her use vacation, even when she took time off. Over the years, she accumulated months worth of vacation.

It came in quite useful when she got Leukemia. She was in the hospital for a full 3 months after being diagnosed. She came home and died the day they released her.

She never missed a paycheck though.

Maybe I should start a nonprofit for old ladies who are blind in one eye.

We’ll supply guide dogs and handsome young men to help them climb the stairs in the dark.

We’ll send out glass eyeballs on fake silver chains to contributors. “Be the first on your block”

Best to do so in a friendly jurisdiction... Finding the friendly jurisdiction is the key, IMHO.

IF she lives in HI, where would she go on vacation? CA?

A successful Non-Profit I know about started as a passion for local history. The local government was supportive as being good for the community.

It appears to me they have been wildly successful.

No other details will be posted.

non-profits would be irrelevant without the income tax.

I know a guy who is a horder, I told him he should setup a technology museum that is “by appointment only”

and yes it would be legit he has everything from the first chips amd and intel ever made with pets and apples, to every video card generation and old flash chip writers, to like sf 600+ things. ancient as400 and vax machines to the latest 3d printers and even keysight stuff.

I made a joke about needing surgery and he was like, yeah I have a DaVinci machine I bought at auction a couple months ago and dug some manipulators out of his office storage to show me

one of my old neighbors did that for ww1 artifacts
