An Alaska nurse hired to serve as a surrogate for a couple in California is desperately trying to save their unborn baby's life after they demanded an abortion.
McKenna West, a single mother of two young children, applied to Connecticut-based Worldwide Surrogacy Specialist in LLC last year and received a preliminary approval based on her medical history, Live Action reports.
She was then shown the profile of a couple whom she felt would be a 'good match' for her and she met on Zoom with the couple, only referred to in court documents as AB and CD.

Surrogate Mom, seemed like a good match, met on zoom....good match wants surrogate to have abortion.
The whole damn story is beyond bizarre.

Seems to me that the law would accept that child as hers. And I would suspect that to be true even if she had signed some 27 page document agreeing that it didn’t. There’s no way that I’d allow anyone to *require* that I undergo any kind of surgical procedure.
The legal concern would be on the child being related to the parents and eligible to their money. If the nurse is truly doing this for the baby’s life, there should be something signed that the baby is entitled to nothing from the parents.

Wow. As I see it, the biological father is not going to be required to support the baby if born and it will then be the mother’s problem.
Abortions result in a higher incidence of breast cancer and other medical issues to the mother. And I think this nurse has every right to carry the pregnancy to term, but the parents will not have an obligation to support the child.
So, what happens if the mother has the baby, finds someone to do the surgery free, and the baby grows up normally?

Not allowing to be told to have a surgical procedure sounds correct. I wonder if most surrogate agreements include agreeing to abort if prospective parents say so? Can anyone require that, despite if it is in a contract?

What is affected
HLHS affects a number of structures on the left side of the heart that do not fully develop:
The left ventricle is underdeveloped and too small
The mitral valve is not formed or is very small
The aortic valve is not formed or is very small
The ascending portion of the aorta is underdeveloped or is too small
Often, babies with HLHS also have an atrial septal defect, a hole between the upper chambers (atria) of the heart.
During pregnancy, a fetus has two small openings between the left and right sides of the heart. These openings are called the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA in image above) and the foramen ovale. These openings in the heart usually close a few days after birth.
In babies with HLHS, the left side of the heart cannot pump oxygen-rich blood to the body properly. Oxygen-rich blood bypasses the left side of the heart through the patent ductus arteriosus and the foramen ovale. This issue occurs during the first few days of life. The right side of the heart then pumps blood to both the lungs and the rest of the body. When these openings close, it is harder for oxygen-rich blood to get to the rest of the body.
I’ve done extensive medical research on patent foramen ovals, or holes between the right and left atrium of the heart. All people have them in utero as the blood passes through this hole prior to lung development and pulmonary fun tion.
Normally, this hole closes after birth, forcing blood to flow through the pulmonary artery and lungs prior to reaching the left side of the heart where it is then pumped through the body.
In about 20% of the population, this hole never completely closes. The percentage is approximately 30% of people who die at a young age.
The problem is that any blood clots that would ordinarily be filtered out by the lungs, cross through this hole and get pumped directly into the brain causing stroke.
I am the medical power of attorney over a woman who had several severe strokes due to a large patent foramen ovale. When this is combined with blood factor 5 leiden and Von Willebrand’s disease, both genetic blood clotting disorders, it becomes a ticking time bomb for stroke.
The person I care for is in her 70’s, thus the heart defect is not an automatic death sentence.
If caught early, it can be surgically corrected.

why doesn’t she keep the baby then?
I am not in love with the entire surrogate mom deal. I know a girl who did this for a couple in her church, but she got 50 k to do it, so not exactly altruistic of her.
and if the couple in this story are queers, i’m absolutely not for it.

If the hole is small, it is not a major problem. However, the hole can allow backflow, decreasing the blood flow to the left ventricle which is responsible for pumping the blood throughout the body, including the brain.
