Refinery Closures Increase California’s Reliance on Fuel Imports
Institute for Energy Research ^ | 5-7-2026

Key Takeaways

1 California is now importing 20% of its gasoline from Asian refineries as it continues to close refineries in the most populous state.

2 In just seven months, California has lost about 17% of its refining capacity with the closure of two refineries, and product imports are up 38% this year.

3 Gasoline prices are about $1.60 per gallon higher than the national average because of state taxes, fees, and other penalties, but the situation could get worse, as Asia is particularly dependent on Middle East oil, which is sidelined due to the Iranian conflict.

4 A domestic refined products pipeline known as the Western Gateway project could help if its developers decide to construct it this summer, but it is not expected to be operational until 2029.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Newsom is closing California refineries due to global warming concerns and transferring fuel production for the state to Asian refineries which have no pollution control regulations. Go figure

They (and Biden) promised to end fossil fuels.

As prices ramp up towards that end, can you imagine what the last gallon of gasoline will cost?

The only reason Leftists won’t have us all walking is because they really want us dead.

Sort of like the old English saying of carrying coal to Newcastle. A pointless and unnecessary endeavour. This is the madness of leftism in action.

Time to start throwing environmental objections at the Western Gateway.

The old saying is “A conservative is a liberal who has been mgged”.

Time to keep mugging the California liberals until they wake up.

I think Newscum should close the rest of the refineries before he leaves office. gas is 3.89 across the river in AZ!

arizona gas per your note...$3.89
california gas per AI today... “$6.54 to $6.79 per gallon for regular unleaded, with some stations charging up to $6.99”

California’s politicians have so Ph*qued up that state with super high taxes and super restrictive regulations....
it is a crime, a crying shame too

Liberty Lake, WA — $4.79
Stateline, ID — $3.94

5 miles between them but world’s apart. Usually the spread is over $1.

This the reason I don’t listen to “nationwide” gas price averages.

The average is skewed by high price and high gas taxes like CA, NY. IL.

Why are the Democrat controlled governments in the blue states doing everything in their legislative power doing all they can to inflict as much financial damage as possible to their states and to their citizens? Could it be that after their state’s economy collapses that they believe they can reconstruct their state’s economy in the communist image of a communist country that suits their communist beliefs? Just curious.

indeed. all the media fuss about gas prices is, well, highly exaggerated (except for the 3 or 4 states with such high taxes and restrictions on production....that the local politics drives the prices sky-high)

take NY and Californication and a couple more spots out of the housing statistics and the prices are much lower, too

maybe neither is a bargain but the federales have done little or nothing to drive the prices up (or down for that matter)...where the high prices are really serious problems it is mostly the state or local politicians that are doing it

Which Asian refineries are supplying the fuel?

Are they friendly or China?

Stupid move, but it’s California.
