Over 50K federal employees and their $2B in salaries eliminated under Trump in 2025

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has overseen the departure of 50,000 federal employees and trimmed nearly $2 billion in salary payments within its first year, according to data released by a taxpayer watchdog group.

OpenTheBooks provided the “Swamp Update” in a Monday report highlighting the reduction in the federal workforce from 1,506,603 to 1,452,891 between 2024 and 2025, dipping to 53,712 fewer employees in government under President Trump than under former President Joe Biden.

At the same time, the federal payroll got a $1.86 billion cut in the first year of Trump’s second term.

Biden’s final year in office saw federal salaries surge by more than $10 billion and the federal headcount by more than 13,000.

The watchdog figures don’t include a headcount or salaries for employees at the Department of War or the US Postal Service, which employ more than 3 million active duty and reserve troops as well as civilian workers.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency — which officially wound down its operations this July — had spearheaded the layoffs and cuts early in 2025 with the shuttering of the US Agency for International Development, eliminating billions of dollars in programs and mass firings.

Barely getting started. But you have to start somewhere.

I can think of more that should go.

For example, how many work in all those AG and IG offices responsible for stewarding the spending? They don’t.

Or the GAO. Between those and Somalis stole us blind.

A 23 curious kid finds it.

How much salaries do they have? Give Nick Shirley 20%.

And DOGE pointed out agencies still use paper and filing cabinets, etc.

Who has the office supply contracts?

The appeals are starting to hit the U.S. Courts of Appeals. Don’t expect this to last.

Agencies in certain locations want to keep things labor intensive. This satisfies the demands of certain politicians so the locals can be hired.

The savings is not in the salaries. It is a good start though.

He missed the illegals court started 30 years ago that has yet to try a single case or do a thing.

AI says “Workforce Fluctuations: Direct federal civil service numbers experienced significant contractions during 2025 due to administration downsizing, but corresponding comprehensive headcounts for private service contractors hired through USASpending.gov are historically estimated to equal or exceed the direct civil service workforce without an official fixed tally.”

No head count of “consultants” is available. But moving the same or similar person from one category to the other is a common practice in both government and the private sector to change “appearances”.

Consultant spending rose from $755 billion to $793 billion.

...from a guy who hasn’t had a real fulltime job since the Army in Vietnam...but a busy life as a consultant.

Consultant spending rose from $755 billion to $793 billion.

So it is basically shuffling around the deck chairs. Political theater.
