ABC's George Stephanopoulos stoked Anthony Fauci's already supersized ego with a text after one of the disease doctor's many chummy Good Morning America appearances during the pandemic, newly released diary entries show.
Fauci claimed that Stephanopoulos heaped praise on him following an interview in July 2020 where the doctor addressed criticism he was receiving from then-President Donald Trump.
'Thank you, Tony. So impressive,' Stephanopoulos, 65, wrote on July 28, 2020, immediately after the interview, according to Fauci.
The GMA host had started by asking for Fauci's response to Trump retweets that labeled him a 'fraud.'
'I don’t even read them, so I don’t really want to go there. I just will continue to do my job no matter what comes out,' Fauci, 85, said on-air.
Recalling the exchange in his diary, Fauci said: 'George asked me to respond and I blew it off.'
He also wrote that Trump was 'playing a weird game' where he acted 'okay with me in person' and 'to the press' while 'retweeting stuff that attacks me' to end the entry.
The record is one of many released over the weekend showing the then National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NAID) head's borderline obsession with his sudden celebrity.
