Senior London MP Chris Philp has told how a French warship “fired 17 warning shots” as he was giving an interview in the Channel about illegal immigration.
The Shadow Home Secretary accused the crew of the French Navy’s Flamant patrol vessel of trying to “intimidate” him as he was stressing that far more needs to be done to tackle the “small boats” crisis.
Mr Philp said the incident happened at around 10.15am French time (9.15am UK time) about two to three miles off the French coast near Cap Gris Nez, between Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer.
He was clearly slightly startled by the sound of gun shots being fired mid-interview.
“Is that a warning shot towards us, I don’t know?” he exclaimed.
The Croydon South MP later told The Standard: “It felt like an attempt to intimidate us.
“They issued no warning.”
He added: “They should concentrate their efforts on stopping the wave of illegal immigration rather than shooting in the vicinity of British MPs.”
Matt Coker, the captain of the fishing boat on which Mr Philp was doing his interview, said he had “never seen anything like it before”.
He explained how firing exercises are widely broadcast in advance.
“There's been nothing announced on the VHF from what we've heard this morning. We've been out since six o'clock,” he stressed.

Only read the headline, but you can’t fire 17 “warning” shots. The first few can be considered “warning” shots, but then you look like the idiot mother yelling at her kids saying you better stop or you are going to get it. If 3-5 shots don’t work, and you keep firing to miss, you are an idiot, but then again this is France. At what point do you stop missing and start trying to hit? If shot 5 didn’t work and then 6 and then. . . . ?????

This is hard for me to follow as I don’t know any of these people. Was this a British MP doing an interview saying France needs to stop illegals crossing the channel?
Meanwhile, France is trying to encourage the illegals to leave France and go to Britain so they used their guns to scare the MP being interviewed?
