SANFORD, Maine — Former state Senate President Troy Jackson is racking up support to become Maine’s next Democratic Senate nominee, with one of his top opponents ending her campaign on Sunday.
“Donald Trump’s attacks on our democracy are only accelerating, and the best way that I can serve our state and country at this moment is by focusing exclusively on my role as Secretary of State,” Bellows said in a statement.
York County Democratic Party Chairwoman Kathie Purdy announced the news just as Democrats gathered at a performing arts center began casting ballots for delegates to next week’s state convention, eliciting gasps from the crowd.
Democratic delegates at next week’s convention will select a new nominee to take on GOP Sen. Susan Collins, after primary winner Graham Platner abruptly ended his campaign last week after an allegation of sexual assault, which he denied.

What a crap show that debate was. I’ve only heard clips, and of course that profoundly disturbed man got all the attention, but the piece of her that I saw and heard definitely shows she’s not ready for prime time

Half of Maine’s 16 counties held delegate caucuses yesterday with well over half of the total of 500 chosen. The other 8 counties cauces today. Troy Jackson claims that 319 of the delegates are pledged to him which woud give him a majority of the total of 601 delegates. It is likely he will continue that path with today’s caucuses.
The convention next Saturday is going to be a corination and a campaign rally. I suspect the party managers will be happy about this process outcome.
I suspect most of the other real candidates will pull out also in the next day or so. No point in throwing good money after bad.
The next step for the winner is raising money. Platner left $1.7 million in the bank, but the winning candidate cannot directly use that. He will start from scratch. Max contribution to a federal candidate is $3,500. He will need 286 of those contributions just to get to $1,000,000.
Susan Collins has $11 million in her warchest.
They next congressional and senater reports are not due until October 15 for the period ending September 30. So we will not get and idea of his strength until it is all but over.
There will be clues based on his activity. He is not wealthy, so he cannot self fund his campaign.
Looks like NBC has made their choice.
Yes and in response to his “attacks” on democracy, Bellows tried to keep President Trump off the primary ballot in 2024. So who is the real attacker of democracy.
Jackson is just as far left as Platner. With Bellows out, Jackson should get the nomination next Saturday.

Maine had its primary election on June 9. There is no provision in Maine state laws for another state-wide primary. A few cities have special elections for their school budgets etc., but no provisions for another primary.
Election workers need to be found for every ward in the state, ballots need to be printed etc. all before July 27.
And I believe there was a traffic court judge in Illinois that tired to prevent President Trump from being on the ballot in 2024.

Well, after the November election the legislature could reappoint her as Secretary of State.
All the state-wide office holders except the governor are appointed by the state legislature. The house and senate meet as one body and whoever has a majority of members appoint all of the state-wide officers. Also, Maine does not have a lieutenant governor.
