The Los Angeles Unified School District could run out of money within about a year and is showing severe signs of financial distress, according to county education authorities.
The nation's second-largest school district, which serves more than half a million students, faces possible insolvency, prompting the Los Angeles County Office of Education to take action.
"I think it's something everyone was hoping would be avoided, but I don't think it's really a surprise to anyone," educational consultant Jamie Bacall said.
County officials said LAUSD is projected to be more than $230 million in the hole by November of next year. In response, the county superintendent has appointed a fiscal expert and given the school board 45 days to fix its budget.
"I think it might actually be a good thing to have a, sort of like a neutral pair of eyes on the LAUSD budget," said Nicolle Fefferman, co-founder of Parents Supporting Teachers.
Officials cited massive union contracts estimated to cost more than $1 billion annually, along with declining enrollment and reduced state funding, as factors contributing to a growing deficit and the possibility of state oversight.
"Worst case scenario is the state takes over and this goes under receivership under the state, and that takes a long time to get out of and it is really hard to maintain any control over curriculum, over class size," Bacall said.
New LAUSD Superintendent Andrés Chait sought to reassure families and staff, saying in a statement: "We welcome the opportunity to collaborate and remain focused on making thoughtful, responsible decisions that protect classroom instruction and student success."
Fefferman said any budget reductions should avoid affecting students and campuses as much as possible.

Students rejoice across the county.
Fire 90% of administrators. Books will balance, teachers will be ecstatic, scores will soar, and there will be no money for the “next big fad.” Problem solved. It is such a simple solution.
There is no “industry” more susceptible to very harmful fashion and fads than education.
No one can read OR add, so how do they KNOW they are running out of money????
Get rid of illegals and DEI programs and admins who support these types of programs.
Oh no...they’re running out of other peoples money
10 years ago reported to have had [at least] 300 administrative employees with salaries over $100,000 each. Currently close to $200 million in the hole.
Solution? Contemplating getting rid of a couple of janitor level employees.
Touche. Excellent. Made my morning.
awwwwwwww aint that a pity..gee thats what happens when you spend BILLIONS for illegal aliens and billions to teach kids that boys can become girls and girls can become boys and other far left nonsense
Taxes in Kali are apparently too low. (Snicker)
Sounds like California needs the lottery. Oh, wait.
It’s local. They’ll get the money. (National)Same with SSI.
The nation could pour $10 trillions into these bloated, unionized, urban education bureaucracies.
And results would only get worse.
That’s called negative marginal utility - every dollar spent actually causes MORE harm.
Public school funding needs to be drastically reduced, along with a forced, radical change in the management, hierarchy and assumed pedagogy of today’s public schools
The teachers union answer will be to raise teacher salaries and benefits.
I guess i’m missing something. Did they adopt a budget which had such a built in deficit? Are they allowed to do that? Talk of shortfalls, in the hundreds of millions of dollars , is serious money.
Well, to make ends meet, we know it will have to be some combination of cutting expenses and or increasing revenue.
Here comes the Federal bailout.
Will never happen. Taxes will go up and Californians will pay it just like they always have
Insolvency my ass. As long as there are taxpayers in Commiefornia there is no such thing as Insolvency
That is one way of saving LA County Kids.
