Graham Platner formally drops out of Maine’s Senate race He announced he was leaving Wednesday. On Friday, he made it official. July 10, 2026
Graham Platner formally withdrew from the U.S. Senate race Friday, clearing the way for Democrats to choose a new nominee to take on Republican Sen. Susan Collins this fall.
The move was widely expected after Platner was accused of sexual assault in 2021 by a Maine woman, who detailed her experience in a story published by Politico on Monday.
Platner has broadly denied the allegations, but he announced Wednesday that he was suspending his campaign because he had lost political and financial support.
Until he signed the paperwork, the timing of his exit was uncertain. On Thursday, his campaign said he wouldn’t make it official until Monday. Then he released a letter Friday afternoon.
“People are desperate for a change. For this broken system to be righted. For the American experiment to be furthered. Over the past eleven months, thousands and thousands of Mainers poured their hearts, time and talent into a movement to deliver that vision. I will be forever grateful to them,” Platner wrote in the letter formally withdrawing, which was addressed to the Maine Department of the Secretary of State.
His devoted followers had urged him to stay in the race and his campaign sent around a 48-hour survey on early Wednesday seeking feedback for Platner and the state party. But by Friday, he was out.
Maine Democrats plan to nominate a new candidate at a pop-up convention in the coming days. That convention is expected to include the party’s 100-member state committee, plus another 500 delegates elected by county committees.
Additional details, including the nominating process for candidates, are still being finalized.
The party needs to name a replacement candidate by 5 p.m. on July 27.
“F*ck ICE. Free Palestine. Up the Hearts,” Platner’s letter concluded.

Doing it this afternoon gave the Dems three more days of an offical vacancy, although there needs to be a writ of vacancy issued by the Secy of State.
Said Secy is planning on being a candidate in that election.
Can someone post the actual letter that is in the article.
Dems hero, now the say a zero
Platner is PERFECT for Hamas, they both love raping women, so its a perfect fit. Maybe we can send him to Gaza and let the IDF take care of the rest, just saying
Graham if you sabotaged the dims enough to prevent any takeover by them in November we'll remember you fondly.
When your approval or disapproval is tethered only to the desire to acquire power and control, nothing else makes any difference, good or bad.
And so it is with them.
UNPRINTABLE
As soon as he got under water in the polls he had to go. If he was still ahead, he would still be the rat nominee.
I look forward to this joker sliding back into obscurity.
I hope Platner decides to run as a write-in candidate.
Are votes already mailed in for Platner “spent”, and effectively wasted?
If not, how is it done to see who is supposed to be able to vote “again”, since he dropped out?
Just wondering how the Dems will try to game the system, you know, by any means necessary.
When a conservative woman accused him the media paid it little attention and ascribed it to her political beliefs, a hit job.
When a liberal woman said the same thing the media and democrat leadership knew he would lose. Both threw him into the dog pit, Viking style.
““F*ck ICE. Free Palestine.”
I’d do some looking into whoever he was buddies with in the military. They are likely bad seeds, too.
He was originally going to wait until the very last minute. Guess he got the deal he was angling for...a “Bernie-like” coastal mansion no doubt.
based on his exploits he’s more qualified as a dem candidate for president!
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Where do you find another nazi this time of night?
Check must’ve cleared.
Thank you for posting. Posting a text version of the letter does not do justice to his statement.
