Ukraine warns of interceptor missile shortage as 22 killed in Kyiv region

The Ukrainian Air Force says a "serious shortage" of interceptor missiles meant none of the 23 ballistic missiles fired by Russia at Kyiv on Sunday night were shot down.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed for allies to take "strong decisions" at this week's Nato summit to provide Kyiv with air defences.

After the strikes, he said the Ukrainian military had been successful in intercepting cruise missiles and drones – but not ballistic missiles.

Zelensky warned that Moscow would continue to hit residential buildings as long as defensive Patriot missiles "remain in our allies' stockpiles".

Sorry Zelensky, this happens when your side of a war runs out of equipment. It is called losing, loser.
How about calling for an election?

Missiles are in short supply so it is unlikely that they will get any missiles

The US itself needs all the interceptor missiles ( very expensive) it can get to arm US naval vessels and to keep control of the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian drones are numerous, cheap and effective.

If Zelenskii doesn’t want Ukrainian cities to be hit, move all military grade targets out of them.

No go.

Putin is only hitting civilian targets.

To be fair, we warned them in early 2025 when we tried to encourage Zelensky to take that "deal" to the end the war.

They had some Patriots that we gave them. But once they're out, they're out.

The U.S. currently produces about 600 Patriot missiles per year, but combined demand—driven especially by resupplying Ukraine and defending Gulf allies against threats from Iran—can reach around 1,500 annually, leaving a shortfall of roughly 900 missiles per year.

“Every PAC-3 MSE interceptor carries a production lead time of 24 months for the missile and 30 months for the solid rocket motor. Such timelines are due to physical industrial constraints, such as the lengthy curing time required for solid rocket motors”

“Boeing produces the active radar seeker for every PAC-3 MSE from a single facility in Huntsville, Alabama, and in 2025 it delivered only around 650 to 700 seekers.”

“Ukrainian military advisors in the Gulf were shocked to see coalition batteries firing eight interceptors to shoot down a single Iranian drone.”

That was from a gulf state. They may have missiles to spare.

“Putin is only hitting civilian targets.”

To hit a target in Ukraine might cost the Russians about $1 million. About 95% of the $50,000 Shaheed drones are shot down by Ukraine.

The Russians obviously need to select targets carefully.

Civilians are hit because the warheads are typically not destroyed when the drones and missiles are hit by Ukrainian defenders.

Ukrainian military grade facilities should not be placed within a few miles south or southwest of Ukrainian cities.

Do not power up drones, military or civilian, within the built-up areas of Ukraine that are away from the front. The Russians look for the signals.

You think Patriot missiles are expensive now?
When the Euros copy the 40-year-old design, US sales will end, and taxpayers will be saddled with the full cost...

The Euros can smell the money; rumor is they are currently field testing in Ukraine.

Trump has now allowed some European nations and Japan to start making Patriot missiles and systems, he hasn’t authorized Ukraine directly yet, if ever, but they should be helped as these other producers kick in.

Increased production (of everything, not just Patriots but other missiles, drones, and artillery) is happening and on the way, depending on the product.

“Lockheed Martin said on Tuesday that it has reached a seven-year agreement with the U.S. Department of War to increase the annual production capacity for its PAC-3 missile interceptors to 2,000 units a year from about 600 previously.”
