Largest U.S. power grid operator PJM said on Friday it was under a federal alert to cut electricity consumption across its territory as it battled generator outages, massive overloading on its transmission lines and a surge in air conditioning use from prolonged sweltering heat.
PJM said it told utilities to reduce electricity to customers who are under contract to reduce consumption during emergencies. PJM serves 67 million people in the Mid-Atlantic, South and Washington, D.C., area.
Spot wholesale electricity prices in northern Virginia, home to the largest collection of data centers in the world, have surged beyond $2,000 per megawatt hour this week. That compares to about $40 per MWh when PJM is not in distress.

A dangerous, long-lasting heat wave that has brought triple-digit temperatures across much of the central and eastern United States was expected to continue Friday and through the weekend. Typical warm summer weather is not likely to return to much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic until Monday.
Around 180 million people were under extreme heat warnings or heat advisories on Friday, and many had already faced several days of severe warnings to avoid going outdoors in the hottest part of the day. Forecasters expect some of the highest temperatures around Philadelphia, which could hit 104. New York was poised to reach 101 and Washington 103.
It would have been nice instead of spending ourselves into oblivion with social welfare programs we had invested in our infrastructure.
Their green energy sucks the life out of the power grid , it can’t take the pressure like Hydro , gas or nuclear
Everything was fine until they shut all those coal burning plants.
The new startup generation has not kept pace w/the required closures.
PJM, the grid mentioned above, used to have over 200GW generation capability just about 5 years ago.
Now it’s just over 180. Yesterday’s peak was about 165...
Two dangers in urban America.
1) terrible effects of heat with humidity of vulnerable people.
2) The hellish chaos as soon as the grid goes down. Violence, looting....
During the biggest northeast blackout a woman said to a TV interviewer: “They said on TV this started with an Act of God. That means God did this for black people wo we could pick up the stuff in the stores and finally get the things we can’t afford because of the way America is set up.”
Two males in Paula Abdul’s group for “Straight Up” and “Forever Your Girl” hits were shown years later in People Magazine in a reprint of their first news appearance carrying a long, really expensive cabinet from a top end furniture store to steal it as loot. Article said they both regretted that phase of their lives.
Also coal-fired power plants, where a massive pile of ready to burn fuel is stockpiled ready-to-go adjacent to the power plant. When demand surges, crank up the conveyor belts and max out the plant’s capacity. Obama (in particular) killed these plants in the name of global warming.
Mayor was Abraham Beame, Dem.
Several days were 10 degrees below normal, which is 74.
Since the official temp in Seattle is located next to a run way at Sea-Tac Airport, our measured temps are 1 to 4 degrees hotter than downtown Seattle.
How much does charging the batteries on EV‘s add to the need for electricity? No one seems to talk about that. Just about data centers.
There are 195 countries on this planet and our government gives our tax dollars to about 180 of them
They do the same thing here in Phoenix. Airports are nothing but concrete so of course it’s going to be hotter.
A small, well placed firecracker would bring down the grid.
ny voted for this clown, now let them stew in their own juices as they sweat out these hot days of summer. See what it was like in the heat waves of the past!
1882, 1896, 1911, 1936, 1953. And no AC.
No problems in the blackout of 1965.
Heat waves are a good opportunity to push Chicom agitprop against data centers. Not once does the article question why the largest US power grid is unable to meet the demands of a recurring and predictable event known as summer.
