Ministers are concerned that President Trump will publicly turn on Sir Keir Starmer at a Nato summit next week for failing to commit to spending more on defence.
The prime minister this week committed to spending an additional £15 billion on defence as he published a 10-year investment plan. The £4.7 billion pledge was unfunded, leaving a hole in finances that would have to be filled by Andy Burnham at the next budget. It also included £6.8 billion of as yet undetermined cuts to government departments.
Economists pointed out that hitting the government’s target of increased defence spending of 3.5 per cent of GDP by 2035 will require an additional £25 billion a year, equivalent to a 3p rise in income tax.
Trump has already issued a stark warning to other Nato allies before the summit in Ankara, Turkey. He published a graph comparing the US commitment to Nato at $999 billion dollars with those of allies — including the UK — that committed less than $100 billion each.
He wrote on his social media site Truth Social: “Ridiculous for the USA to continue along this one sided path when the relationship is not reciprocal. They were not for us!!!”
Matthew Whitaker, the US ambassador to Nato, said the UK is “not where it needs to be” on defence capability and urged the government to “do its homework” by committing to spending 5 per cent of GDP on defence by 2035.
He told Sky News: “Incomplete is the grade I would give them right now — because I think there is great capacity in the UK to spend more on defence, to become more capable.
“Where Britain’s history has always been to have a strong and capable and ready defence apparatus, obviously, that’s not where we are today.”

I thought this already happened, about two weeks ago.
Trump breezing past the sitting Prime Minister, w/o greeting or acknowledging him. This was one or two days before Starmer officially resigned. It was all on camera.
Hopefully it will help isolate the countries that refuse to fully participate and other European countries will join us in going after them.
“Global Defence Bank?” More withdrawals than deposits, I betcha. The US better not be a part of that nonsense.
Cute. Like a commie student government project. Complete with other people’s money. Canada is just a front for China anyway.
What other President defends the US like Trump does?
Soon these countries will be ruled by muslims (which will be even worse than the marxist governments are now) and will be our enemies. We need to keep our funding because we don’t want it used against us.
President Trump will turn on Keir Starmer again because the poser is a nancy boy and always has been.
Britain has no navy and little air force. Their ability to project power short of a nuclear missile is nearly non-existent.
Britain is an example of how a nation’s military is more than just about budgets, it gives an insight into the state of that nation.
My two cents...
The Euro politicians expect and want Trump to act the bully at the NATO summit, because the increased support the bullying brings will allow them to do nothing about defense spending and preparedness. With the expectations negative, Trump should project a statesmanly, forward-looking attitude, look to the future of the alliance, spell out what he wants a mature NATO to be and do, etc., and try to be downright inspiring. Making Starmer an object of sympathy is counterproductive — he’s permanently done.
People on Coke brace …

Their strategy is to wait until Trump is done with his term and then it is business as usual for Europe which means that the American taxpayers get to pick up the bill for defending Europe.
More evidence the EU wants to the US to take on the burden of war with Russia. That is the EU wants to start the war with Russia and the US is to lead the charge into Ukraine.
