The FBI in Connecticut said it arrested four men who allegedly stole tens of thousands at a time from ATMs at rest stops along I-95 from Darien to New Haven.

In a two-week span, the four suspects stole more than $500,000 from eight different ATM locations, according to investigators.

The suspects are Venezuelan nationals who used hardware and malware to get the machines to churn out endless streams of cash, law enforcement said. At a northbound rest stop in Fairfield, prosecutors said the men made off with $136,000 in just one haul.

The little ATMs in convenience stores don’t usually have more than $10,000 in them. The little “cartridges” don’t hold all that much and there are usually two of them in each machine.

$130k out of one machine is a big, built-in-the wall type of ATM. Those are generally owned by banks and have more “commercial” level machines in them.

Using “malware” would assume that each ATM is running on the same software. They are not telling if these were attacks on one bank or brand of ATM. That would indicate more of an “inside” job.

This doesn’t sound like the work of a bunch of guys wrapping a chain around a little ATM and dragging it out of the store. It sounds like organized crime at a grander scale.

America is a land of great opportunity where trespassers can lift themselves from poverty to immense wealth in a short time.

Sammy "The Bull" Gravano has a podcast segment where they learned how to empty payphone coinboxes.

It turned out that Puerto Rico used a large number of that type payphone so he and a buddy went down there and cleaned the phones out.

VERY EASY to find these people, these days, thanks to our surveillance state, where everyone’s license plate is entered into a central database, as they pass by “Flock Safety Cameras”. These guys NEVER had a chance.

(look it up, we’ve had thread on it)

And nobody saw them doing this?

If they did it probably did not look like anything unusual.

They use computer hardware and malware (computer program) to make the machine spit out all of the money.

Unless you knew what they were doing, you wouldn't recognize what was going on.

They would likely pull up to a drive through and open the car door hook up their computer to the machine run their program, collect the cash and leave.

Five minutes and they're gone.

Basically they're hackers.
