India’s oil imports from Russia are on track to hit a new record in June, as refiners continue to rely heavily on discounted Russian crude after supply disruptions in West Asia caused by the regional conflict.
According to preliminary vessel-tracking data from commodity analytics firm Kpler, India imported an average of 2.6 million barrels of Russian oil per day in June so far. That accounts for 53.5% of the country’s total crude imports during the period.
For the full month, Russian imports are expected to exceed 2.35 million barrels per day, which would be the highest monthly level ever recorded. The previous record was 2.2 million barrels per day in May 2023.

When the rest of the world put sanctions on Russian exports because of the Ukraine war the Russians discounted their crude to China and India.
I BELIEVE the discount was either 30% or $30/bbl below the Brent Sea Crude spot price. So, if the current spot price is $74. India and China are buying it at either $44 or $52 ish.
Either way they are buying oil cheaper from Russia than anywhere else in the world. So, India and China were buying as much from Russia as they possibly could ship. What they were not using domestically in their own countries they were selling to their neighbors in Asia or elsewhere.
In addition, India was buying oil and wholesaling it. They may transload that oil from one tanker to another and changing the BOL to reflect a different origin. Or they may blend the Russian oil with crude from another source.
Or they may just take the chance and just change the paperwork on the BOL. This is blatant cheating. However, when there is the opportunity for HUGE profits, companies will take the chance.
Lastly, Indian refiners using this discounted crude can then sell gasoline and diesel to countries like Thailand and be cheaper than anyone else EXCEPT China.
All of this was effected by the shut down of the Straits of Hormuz. China stopped SELLING gasoline and diesel to its neighbors like Thailand. According to a friend who has relatives there the country of 20 million people was back to riding bicycles.
As were many other countries in the Far East that get most of their petroleum products from the gulf.

India benefiting from cheap Russian oil, does not mean that Russia is out of trouble economically. Between Russia and India, only India benefits from the cheap oil.
The Russian economy is dead and Russia will take eons to recover militarily and especially economically. In fact, Russia might as well split up, because the country is no longer viable.
