Trump Education Department to shift 7.5M off unlawful Biden student loan repayment plan
NY Post ^ | June 22, 2026 | Josh Christenson

WASHINGTON — The Department of Education is alerting students on Biden administration student debt repayment plans of a shift that will “streamline” the programs for millions.

Under secretary of education Nicholas Kent told The Post in an interview that about 7.5 million individual student borrowers will have 90 days to exit Biden’s SAVE Plan starting July 1.

In total, SAVE borrowers hold about $365 billion in outstanding debt, according to an Education Department spokesperson.

“We have over 40 repayment and discharge options currently, and the system has become overly complex and very difficult to understand,” Kent said, describing the options as “a Frankenstein model.”

“One of the purposes of the Working Families Tax cuts Act is to simplify repayment, so whether or not you have a certificate in pipe fitting or you have a Ph.D. in philosophy, it’s understandable and easy to navigate,” he added.

Different tranches of students will be contacted by loan service providers and then have 90 days to enter one of two Trump administration repayment plans for student borrowers. The Biden administration’s plans will be fully shut down by July 1, 2028.

More than 300,000 SAVE borrowers have already switched to the Trump administration’s version of an income-driven repayment plan, known as the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), Kent noted.

If the millions of borrowers all sought to move off their plan at once it “would create sort of a bottleneck,” he said, “and we don’t want that. We want to support borrowers.”

The American workers and taxpayers should not be forced to pay for a bunch of worthless college participation certificates signed by communist maggots who hate America.

I am a victim of falling for the loans in my youth and have been plagued with repayment. When I say victim I mean I was endlessly promised by government and schools how easy it would all be and how I would be guaranteed a high enough paying job to make payments. That of course didn’t quite happen and other “life events” really threw wrenches in the plan that they never warn you about.

We’ve finally gotten to a place where repayment is now possible and can reasonably pay off the balance in 2-3 years. Why didnt we prioritize it over other credit cards or loans? It wasn’t a priority. The Gov kept pushing it off, making promises of better things coming, so we prioritized other things first.

Not saying all this to justify myself but to explain the mindset of other borrowers. If I with all good intention to oay off my loans put it off, imagine the mindset of all other borrowers who have no intention of paying it off. I am grateful on the tough love approach by the administration. No one is going to prioritize this unless they have too. Make it a priority and it’ll get done. Until then everyone will never run out of excuses.

Did legislation get passed to repeal the Carter Era legislation that set the department up?

No that did not happen! All Trump could do was issue EO’s to move money and programs around and reduce the number of people employed there.

There were never many directly employed at Dept. of Ed - some 3000. Its clout came from the money it handed out which was considerable. However with no repealing legislation it could come back to its former glory and then some with a Rat administration. And there will be another Rat administration! Why? People are fickle and believe in magic!

That campaign promise is broken.

It will never be kept.

Nobody from the administration even bothers to send a person..... just go and ask congress.

Hey, can you pass an abolish bill to get rid of this department?

It’s a huge fail for such a simple action.

It couldn’t be kept! There was never enough of a majority in Congress to repeal the Carter Era legislation.

You actually think there’s not daily communication both good and bad between the WH and Congress?

The Department of Education, is really just a bank. It has nothing to do with education. Its more like Ford making cars, but Ford Motor Credit Corporation, finances cars.

Exactly right and this is why gov’t spending needs to be severely reduced. You get more of what you subsidize.

Pay people not to work, they won’t work.
Paying people not to pay back their loan (which is essentially what they are doing), they won’t pay back their loans.

Refer the loans to a collection agency. We lose half the money but under Biden it would have been 100%.

"You actually think there’s not daily communication both good and bad between the WH and Congress?"

I fully and 100% entirely reject this question. It is a useless question lacking any valid specifics.

So I will fix it.

You actually think there’s not daily communication both good and bad between the WH and Congress about abolishing the Department of Education?

No. Absolutely not 100% no. It. Is. Not. Happening. Ever. The conversations are NOT NOT NOT happening and the action is not either. I think some conservative voters but mostly and especially GenZ right wingers are demanding to keep the Department of Education and so no. I do not think the Trump Administration will ever, ever ask Congress to abolish it. It's a dead, failed, broken campaign promise. It will never happen. That legislative/law will not be repealed.

As to those GenZ, that is, the Woke Right. There's no evidence the Woke Right wants rid of the DoEd.

The Woke Right is killing us and our agenda.

They could try. Failure is desired - we really need these fights even if they don’t get to the end.

Trump could publicly ask. He isn’t publicly asking, he isn’t privately asking either.

There was initially but it was clear the votes weren’t there. There wasn’t even enough votes to bring it to the floor.

I reject your lack of manners!
