GOP delegates nominated Max Engling as their candidate for secretary of state June 20, capping off a messy convention season with the ousting of the current secretary of state for the second convention in a row.
Engling, a staffer for U.S. Sen. Jim Banks, won with 867 votes after two rounds of voting. Knox County Clerk David Shelton received 627 votes, and Secretary of State Diego Morales received 134 votes. Former gubernatorial candidate Jamie Reitenour lost in the first round after receiving the lowest number of votes.

This is a good thing and gives the GOP a fighting (but not quite probable) chance of keeping the Indiana SOS office.
In can be argued that in many cases Secretary of State (and Attorney General) are more important statewide offices than even Governor. Democrats know this. They’d much rather have SOS than Governor if those offices are split (e.g. Nevada).
Democrats are going all out to win Secretary of State this year in the Hoosier State: nominating a candidate with big name recognition, having a Libertarian on the ballot to siphon off GOP votes and having an even more threatening “independent” (ex-Republican Greg Ballard, the former mayor of Indianapolis) siphon off even MORE GOP votes.
So that’s three supposedly right-leaning candidates to split the right and center votes, vs. just 1 leftist who is running unobstructed.
Bayh could easily win with nowhere near 50% of the vote.
No, there isn’t any runoff if that happens.
