Four years ago, Dan Cox won the Republican primary for governor of Maryland thanks to more than $1 million in television advertising on his behalf funded by the Democratic Governors Association.
Now Mr. Cox — a devotee of President Trump who wrote on social media during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol that Vice President Mike Pence was a “traitor” — is again receiving help from Democrats to win his primary for governor next week.
Gov. Wes Moore, who defeated Mr. Cox by 32 percentage points in 2022, began airing ads on Tuesday on Fox News that said the former state legislator “supports Trump’s agenda” and that quoted a 2022 endorsement from Mr. Trump calling Mr. Cox “MAGA all the way.”
Such messages, of course, are useful to a Republican running in a Republican primary.
The Maryland Democratic Party is also sending mail to Republican voters promoting Mr. Cox and denouncing his leading primary rival, Ed Hale.
Mr. Hale, a retired bank executive who owns the Baltimore Blast indoor soccer team, is a former Democrat who began a primary campaign against Mr. Moore last year before switching parties to challenge the governor as a Republican.
“We’re not going to take anything for granted, no matter who we’re running against,” said Carter Elliott, a spokesman for Mr. Moore’s campaign.
Maryland campaign finance reports show that Mr. Hale has raised more money than Mr. Cox has, but neither has bought television advertising time, according to AdImpact, a media-tracking firm.
Mr. Moore is likely to be a heavy favorite against either Republican in deep-blue Maryland, though running against an ill-funded Trump acolyte he has already defeated once would most likely give him an even easier path to victory.

The Dims do these cross party dirty tricks much more than the GOP.
So.... Democrats are worried about whether their latest manufactured, clean & articulate empty-suit Halfrican is going to win by 40 points or only by 25 points?
When you have all the money in the world I suppose you have to find *something* to spend it on, no natter how frivolous and pointless. Otherwise what fun is it?
Wes Moore is a corrupt commie racist who raised taxes to an unbelievable amount and allowed utility bills to run wild which hurts lower income people and retirees on fixed incomes. That’s one sentiment I share with Trump when he says, “Wes Moore is the dumbest governor...” If I had a picture of this foul creature, I’d superimpose a target for darts over it. And use another copy to line my cats’ litterbox. Go straight to Gehennem, you ____.
They did this in Illinois in 2022 to help sway the GOP governor primary for Darren Bailey. He is up against Pritzker again this year, but I don’t know if they made the same efforts.
Wes Moore the war hero?! Wes Moore the Oxford grad who can’t find a copy of his thesis? (nor can Oxford...) Wes Moore the terrorism expert? Say it ain’t so!
pro-abort republican is worse than, of the same evil as, a pro-abort democrat in Maryland. We have several recent examples.
Better to have your boy raped by an uncle than a stranger??
Rinos and dems say yes. Hence Pratner.
Cox is good. Maryland is bad.
Did he receive money from Moore?
If yes, he's controlled opposition at this point. Why vote for Cox?
When Cox ran last time his radio ads were so embarrassingly cringe that even die hard MAGA people had to suppress a gag.
I believe he’s sincere, but he is not a viable candidate for statewide office in MD. He’s probably a marginal candidate for a local office even on the eastern shore and the western panhandle.
Not trusting an article written by an Epstein.
My personal campaign slogan for this puddle of foul smelling slime: “Less is Moore”. I fear that his election, like so many others (particularly Baltimore-based) depended on black voters voting for “black like me”. They, for the most part, are not up on issues, but big on emotion. There are exceptions, of course, but the average black person I meet in groceries or other stores can’t name a single one of your points or any others. You forgot to include former governor Hogan leaving a $5.3 billion dollar surplus and Moore pissing it away to a $3 billion shortfall.
I voted for Cox in the last election. I happened to meet him in a kosher restaurant with his wife and baby. They had attended a "meet the candidates" event there and he happened to sit at the next table from me. I had a great discussion with him and saw that plank for plank, his platform conformed to mine, which is the same as most conservatives. I will gladly vote for him again.
