Anthropic suspends new AI tools over US government security concerns

Anthropic has suspended its powerful new AI model after US authorities raised security concerns just days following its public release.

In a statement published on its website, Anthropic said it was ordered to suspend foreign nationals from using Claude Fable 5, a program that the company self-described as "too powerful".

"The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance," the company wrote.

Anthropic and the Trump administration are involved in a separate ongoing lawsuit over an order to stop government agencies using the company's AI tools. The BBC has approached the US Department of Commerce for comment.

Claude Fable 5 is a version of Anthropic's Claude Mythos, an AI program rivalling competitors OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

Anthropic said US national security authorities had not identified specific concerns.

"Our understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or 'jailbreaking' Fable 5," the company said.

Jailbreaking is a process of getting past software restrictions designed to protect a cyber network, allowing hackers to access sensitive information or unblock features.

I am an attorney. We have lazy uninformed morons of all kinds, lawyers and pro se litigants filing AI motions and pleadings in court on all levels. AI is so bad, no one need feel threatened by it. Just the use of it shows you are a moron. The fact that these lazy morons are filing this gobbledegook is a threat to our system of justice. I am 100% on the administration’s side on this deal.

They took it down pretty quick but technically you should be able to get access if it’s under export control that just applies to NON US citizens

Some of us can’t use it then which gives you an advantage!

Well, I may be a dip*, but I work from anywhere, my computer is my mobile office, efiling made things mobile, you obviously don’t understand what I am talking about. I happen to also have two brick and mortar offices for the purposes of in person meetings when necessary, depositions, and preparing for trial.

The chicoms are dancing in the streets over this. At the end of the Biden regime they were nearly even with us in AI, now they are a year or more behind thanks to DJT. But every day this ban is in effect is a day they get closer. The chicoms MUST NOT build AGI before we do, that should be the NUMBER ONE national security priority now and forever.

I’m hoping this is the work of some pencil neck Obamunite bureaucrat in Washington who is about to be unemployed and this policy reversed. It is an ANTI-AMERICAN policy that will only WEAKEN this country.

It’s finding security flaws in software like never before. We need to use it to fix the problems before it’s widely used by anyone - especially China.

I have many opinions but in this context maybe Anthropic itself made a useful statement lately:

tl;dr: either it’ll level out, keep developing, or really take off. In other words they don’t know and have written a lengthy paper saying why. :D
