Trump says Europe freeloads on defense. Britain’s own (former) Defense Secretary just agreed

U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey unexpectedly quit on Thursday, saying the government is unwilling to spend enough on the military at a time of “rising threats.” The resignation dealt another blow to embattled Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is already facing demands from Labour colleagues to step down.

Healey told Starmer in a letter that the government’s Defense Investment Plan falls “well short of what is required at this dangerous time.”

Publication of the plan has been delayed amid reports of disagreement between the Defense Ministry and the Treasury.

Starmer said in a letter to Healey that he was sorry to see him go, but insisted that the funding plan would provide the necessary military resources to keep the United Kingdom safe.

“The increases in spending that underpin this plan will be sustainable and fair,” Starmer said. “They will mean significant reallocations of funding from across government departments and the right choices to protect our nation.”

Critics say too little, too late

Starmer has pledged to boost U.K. defense spending to 2.5% of gross domestic product by 2027 and 3% by 2035. But many in the military say that isn’t fast enough.

“You have been unable, and the Treasury has been unwilling, to commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats,” Healey wrote in his resignation letter.

Trump may be blunt here, but what he said is nonetheless true. The US saved Europe from itself THREE TIMES in the last century, and we are still subsidizing their welfare states. Enough is enough.

Yet some Freepers claim that military aid for Israel benefits America's economy, because the money is spent on American weapons and employees.

Does that "logic" not apply to military aid for Europe?

The UK has NATO as it’s military force. And it’s not just the UK. Most other NATO members have depended on NATO for defense, so, they can claim that they don’t each need to spend as much as they would individually if NATO was not around.

So, take NATO out of the equation and no doubt, each country would bring up they’re own defense spending.

But NATO is too big and too good to leave, and so, the UK and others will continue with the excuse of NATO being their defense force. Heck, Putin knows about NATO and not the UK or Germany or France; and NATO has kept Russia away for the last 80+ years. And Putin is experiencing, first-hand, what NATO can do with the assistance they’re giving Ukraine.

So, the umbrella known as NATO is what individual countries can point to as the reason they don’t need to spend as much as separate defense forces.

Israel and the U.S. have common enemies. If Israel didn't exist, those enemies would've come for us a long time ago. Heck, they did, with 9/11. We need to keep the enemies busy far away from our shores.

Israel, in a way, is 'our first line of defense'. Without the U.S., Israel would have been wiped off the face of the Earth. There are many major benefits from us having Israel as our friend. We aid them, they aid us.

From ruling the seven seas with the mightiest navy on Earth 200 years ago, the UK can now muster only a single blue-water vessel out of dock, namely the destroyer HMS Dragon, a medium size blue-water ship ...

Israel and the U.S. have common enemies.

Arabs and Iran are our "common enemies" because we support Israel. Had we remained neutral in the Mideast, the Arabs and Persians would never have been our enemies.

Islam is our enemy. Period. And the Brits and French controlled the Middle East over a century before us. The US had the knowhow to get the oil out of the ground the Arabs were riding their camels over.

Islam is our enemy. Period.

Only if they enter our countries. If they stay in the Mideast, not my enemy, not my problem.

And the Brits and French controlled the Middle East over a century before us.

I don't know what this has to to with anything.

The US had the knowhow to get the oil out of the ground the Arabs were riding their camels over.

That doesn't make it our oil, not if one believes in conservative principles of national sovereignty.

Anyway, the Arabs want to sell the oil. We want to buy. No need for war. No need for us to pick sides in the Mideast. Just buy from whoever happens to control it at the moment.

I am on Israel's side. Then again, not bragging, but I know history and can distinguish a great ally and a real Democracy from medieval tribal societies/countries. Some however, can't. All countries are NOT the same.

Libertarians can be sick evil people.

I am on Israel's side.

I am on America's side.

And it's in America's interest to take no sides in international conflicts, support no foreign powers, and focus on our own domestic problems.

I know history and can distinguish a great ally ...

Israel is an "ally" only in that it helps us fight its enemies (which needn't be ours). Even drags us into its wars.

and a real Democracy ...

Please. The CIA and Mossad and even MI6 have long undermined "real Democracy" and supported kings and dictators in the Arab world, because "real Democracy" would lead to results like Hamas's election win in Gaza.

Not saying Hamas is good. But let's not pretend that our support for Israel is about supporting "real Democracy."

"Real Democracy" is the last thing Israel wants in the Mideast.

“To keep England safe “

From WHAT!!??

While these clowns are arguing over where to put the deck chairs on Titanic the nation is being invaded by savages who make. No effort to hide their hatred of the natives.

Yes, and you’ve been bragging about how big and strong the Euros are. The truth is most are puny pipsqueaks who contribute very little to NATO. The USA is NATO.
