Agriculture's Andy Gipson says until recently, Mississippi’s SNAP error rate didn’t cause welfare bureaucrats much concern. But President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Act changed that. Just last week, the GAO estimated that improper welfare payments are costing state and federal taxpayers a staggering $186 billion a year – and as much as $3 trillion overall since 2003. It’s numbers like these that have inspired Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins to do everything she can to eliminate fraud from state Food Stamp programs.
Thus far, Secretary Rollins’ efforts have led to the removal of millions of ineligible recipients. “A lot of that is fraud,” says Rollins. “A lot of it is people taking the program that shouldn’t have been.”
In particular, the Trump administration is seeking to remove ineligible illegal aliens from U.S. welfare programs. And while Mississippi has complied with data requests that allow USDA to crosscheck eligibility, a deeper problem remains: an agenda to turn a blind eye to fraud and undermine the good work being done by Secretary Rollins and the Trump administration.
Food Stamps, otherwise known as SNAP, is a federal program, but states are responsible for determining eligibility and issuing benefits. To ensure the accuracy of these benefits, the USDA calculates a SNAP “error rate.” When a state pays too little, it’s called an underpayment. When a state pays too much, it’s called an overpayment. It will come as no surprise that, according to the GAO, welfare error rates consist mostly of overpayments to people who are ineligible.

A blind eye...but also a blind spot... American culture seems to think crime and fraud is limited to certain low-life sub-groups of people. In reality fraud exists among white collar professionals.
Deloitte is the #1 Fraudster of SNAP and food stamps, not some Somali and not some Mississippi share cropper. Deloitte IES Integrated Eligibility System software and database enrolls the known dead in SNAP (and in Medicaid, CHPS, WIC, TANF, Sec8, LIHEAP). Deloitte IES is in most states, all the big states (not MN or MS).
Deloitte IES has DUPLICATES, the same person with 2 or 3 ID and benefit plans, including multiple food stamp accounts.
Yes, the poor, the underclass commit fraud. But also the white collar class who are the SWAMP commit fraud.... and their fraud is much bigger and makes much of the small fraud possible.
Agriculture and SNAP should work with HHS and DOJ to remove fraudsters like Deloitte from State and Federal contracts that involve both State and Federal money. Both the mosquitos and the Crocs should be removed from the swamp.
(That Deloitte is the #1 abuser of H1b and many H1b on IES do not understand US law and custom and many H1b IT workers are not competent in IT may be a separate issue.)
There is not much money to be made tracking down welfare fraud. It is just a government job. Not a great incentive. Maybe give forensic accountants a cut of the money they recover and convictions produced. Stealing trillions of dollars (taxation) from people and giving it to others will never work well. Maybe we should figure out some new solutions.
My elderly neighbor had $114 disappear from her SNAP account. We went down to the welfare office and they would not tell her the recipient of the $114. All other grocery store transactions were accounted for. That means the funds were stolen by somebody working at the welfare department.
Most likely
1) A merchant copied your SNAP data and made a purchase on your account without your knowledge
2) A non-merchant scammer was able to get your SNAP data and made a purchase on your account without your knowledge.
3) ???
That does not explain that the transaction was not accounted for. And the SNAP people were not helpful in that regard. Made me suspicious.
“not much money to be made tracking down welfare fraud”
Direct Deloitte Fraud is millions per year per each of 25+ states for 12 years in GA...for varying number of years in other states. Probably more in CA, TX, FL, NY as they are big states.
The Waste/inefficiency part of Waste Fraud Abuse by staff of both Deloitte, Optum, Gainwell, GDIT, Acentra, Accenture, other IT vendors, and Federal and State agency Staff, and Health Insurance Companies and providers across all welfare programs is about many millions per state per year.
The yield to temptation FRAUD of the amateur crook is many millions per state per year.
The intentional FRAUD of the planned fraud is many many millions per year per state.
Obviously, more in CA, TX, FL, NY, IL, MI, PA, than in a small state.
The total is BILLIONS.
Deloitte IES is the #1 cause of waste fraud abuse by others. But there are other causes in the Deloitte states. And, of course, Deloitte is in most, but not all, states. It was kicked out of CT due to bad behavior.
I can only assume that the main driver of this continuing is that some of these funds are going to some politicians at some point. Does the agriculture department get this? Or is Brooke Rollins in on it?
You have 5200 answers on Quora? Very impressive.
Folks,
don’t look at thinks in isolation. think of the fraud that will be reduced by the funding of ice today.
