The Senate passed legislation to fund President Trump’s immigration enforcement agencies early Friday morning, after weeks of delays and fierce backlash to an unrelated $1.776 billion settlement fund that threatened to derail the bill.
Senators voted 52-47 for the $70 billion legislation to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol for the next three years, through the end of Trump’s term.
The final vote came just before 5 a.m., after Republicans narrowly defeated multiple attempts by Democrats and Republicans to add language to the bill that would permanently ban Trump’s settlement fund for political allies who believe they have been politically persecuted.
Republicans cleared a major hurdle overnight when they defeated an amendment proposed by one of their own members, Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, that would have redirected payments from the settlement to members of law enforcement who were injured in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
The amendments were a test of party unity that complicated what should have been an easy vote for Republicans who wanted to keep the focus on immigration enforcement in an election year.
Instead, they spent almost a full day haggling among themselves over whether to block the settlement fund, even after acting Attorney General Todd Blanche had said earlier this week that it would not go forward.
“This would have been done several hours ago if we weren’t having to deal with some of the issues around the fund,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said shortly before midnight.
Thune himself has criticized the judgement fund, which was part of a settlement that resolves Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns and has angered many of his GOP colleagues.

I like the Post - I despise MSN - but for anyone who would rather go to the source...
Thune is no asset. Thank God neither Cornyn, Cassidy, nor Tillis is Senate Majority Leader.
I don’t think any of the three would be worse, and we’d HAVE to replace them as Leader if it was one of them. We’re going to have a fight to remove Thune.
I’d almost rather it was one of those three. In fact, if it was Cornyn, I bet he’d have at least put the SAVE America Act up for a vote in the hopes of getting Trump’s endorsement.
I don’t share your optimism re:Cornyn. He’s stabbed GOP efforts in the back on multiple occasions.
I wish him a happy retirement.

How can the senate redirect a lawsuit settlement with a private individual? That is Trump’s money to do with as he pleases.
I’m glad this turncoat lost his primary.
EC
Do they still have the votes in the House?
Next up:
If the SAVE Act is not active law to be enforced this mod-term election, the world fascist nuclear-level left will execute and succeed at VOTE COUNTING FRAUD that will terminate most Republican careers in the House and Senate.
I am stunned at the passive suicide by the Republicans having them now jamming the gas pedal down as they aim for the poured concrete abutment in their Yugo.
There is no more perfect example of why the GOPe turnout is so-o-o low in mid-terms. At least it took a few months to see what a POS McConnell was but it only took hours for Thune to sink the coming elections this fall.
And Thune didn’t? On what planet?
To include STILL refusing to replace Harry Reid’s Senate Parliamentarian.
I have/had major misgivings to Thune being nominated for that position. I knew what he was for YEARS!
What made you think otherwise?
Sorry. What have I ever said, ever, that made you think i was a fan of Thune?
Should be $700 billion. We waste $33 billion per year on stupid welfare-sponge Puerto Rico alone.
Finally they do their job. 🙄
Unfortunately, getting rid of RINOs is like stepping in a pile of dog poop...
Scrape it off your shoe, but the stench lingers too long...
Your reaction, basically.
Shoes can be washed.
