Deputies with the Nye County Sheriff’s Office arrested three and seized nearly 500 birds in Pahrump in connection with an alleged cockfighting operation.
Cockfighting is the illegal act of breeding and training birds, often roosters, to fight against each other for gambling and entertainment.
On Tuesday, May 26, the sheriff’s office executed search warrants at two separate locations in Pahrump connected to the alleged cockfighting operation. As a result of the operation, three people were arrested, according to a release from Nye County.
The three people arrested are Jorge Guzman Torres, who officials said is in the United States on a permanent resident card; Grisel Juarez Diaz, whose immigration status is pending, according to sheriff’s deputies; and Ignacio Juarez Gomez, who the release said is undocumented. ***
During the operation, police also seized “cockfighting implements,” 11 firearms, 478 birds, and more than $60,000 in cash.
total, Torres faces 187 charges, including the following:
56 felony counts of owning a bird for the purpose of cockfighting
56 felony counts of animal abuse
Two felony counts of operating a residence for the purpose of cockfighting
One gross misdemeanor count of conspiracy to operate a residence for the purpose of cockfighting
63 gross misdemeanor counts of possession of a gaff
Nine felony counts of possession of personal identifying information to establish a false identity or status

Diaz faces 123 charges, including 29 felony counts of owning a bird for the purpose of cockfighting, one felony count of maintaining a residence for the purpose of cockfighting, ***29 felony counts of animal abuse***
Gomez faces 24 charges,***
A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, told 8 News Now that she would hear roosters crowing.
