It’s Way Too Early to Declare Defeat in Iran
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 27, 2026 | Walter Russell Mead

Posted on 05/03/2026 3:52:46 AM PDT by karpov

The establishment consensus is hardening. President Trump’s war with Iran is the culminating disaster of the most damaging and misguided American foreign policy in history. Iranian leaders are humiliating the U.S., German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned. “Superpower suicide” is how Wendy Sherman, a top Iran negotiator under President Obama and Joe Biden’s deputy secretary of state, described Mr. Trump’s Iran policy to ABC News. As Ms. Sherman sees it, the Iran war has alienated allies, assisted Russia financially, and weakened America’s position vis-à-vis China. For Fareed Zakaria, the question is no longer whether the administration’s policies will backfire but whether the damage can ever be repaired.

Critics of the war believe Mr. Trump has worked himself into a trap. The military strikes aimed at decapitating Iran’s leadership brought the most radical elements of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to power. Iran’s stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz can’t be broken without a politically unsustainable ground war. Spiking energy prices offered Vladimir Putin a financial windfall just as Russia’s economy was buckling under the strain of sanctions. China gleefully watches America trash its European alliances and deplete munition stocks needed to defend Taiwan. Meanwhile, because the president has done little to prepare the public for a long conflict, Iran has him over a barrel, and he must bribe or beg the Iranians to give him a quick exit from an unwinnable war.

Time will tell, but it would be a mistake for investors and decision makers to assume that Mr. Trump is desperately looking for the exits. Viewed from the Oval Office, the war may seem less costly than critics charge, and the likelihood of a favorable outcome may appear significantly greater than a horrified foreign-policy establishment can bring itself to believe.

When I first read this, I thought it was satirical parody. Then I realized the author was serious. This is on the level of paid enemy propaganda. This is delusional stuff.

Thanks for posting this.

I’ve been negative on this war from the start, but Mead is a sensible thinker and if he thinks there is still a good chance of a favorable outcome, that’s a good sign.

Paradoxically, there may be more pressure on the Regime from the blockade than all-out bombing, because constant military attack rallies the people against the attackers.

It is not as bad as it seems.

Trump is playing three dimensional chess. Or maybe fourth dimensional chess! Or amazingly, even Twilight Zone Chess!

Farther along we will see the results of his brilliant strategy. Still more winning!

I know this will happen because Trump is never wrong. Truth Social has told me this many times before.

It’s from chapter 16 of art of the deal… pretend things are going terribly for at least one month, then SPRING THE BRILLIANT TRAP ON YOUR OPPONENT!

Killing your own citizens, including by execution, would tend to nullify whatever rallying of the people against the nations trying to liberate them might occur.

Fun article but only really touches the surface layer.

The uniparty + globalist EU people want war vs. Russia. You could write a book on why, but since 1990 and the fall of the USSR instead of welcoming back a post-Soviet Russia this group has been pushing forward incrementally and now has an actual live war to kill Russians with.

This war also during Brandon’s reign was a great vehicle for doing to our economy what the Reagan 1980s effort did for the USSR - making us spend ourselves into insolvency so we’d collapse. It also leaves an open geopolitical field for China/PRC so you can guess they’re supporting (if not controlling) the neo-feudalist EUrocrats and their friends here in the Ukraine meat-grinder and kleptocracy.

Thankfully we elected Trump who instead is dismantling the PRC axis of money and asymmetrical war - slowly in Panama, quickly in Venezuela, Iran, Cuba. This hurts PRC, puts money back in our pocket, and removes avenues for drugs, crime, and invaders to come here, so EU and RINOs and the left are all-in on their propaganda war to sell this as a big defeat for Trump.

Why is (whomever is in charge in) IRGC adamant? They’ve been told by our left to last the 60 days and bam no more war, they’ll put a collar on Trump, use it to get back in power and send you a few more planes full of cash for your hard work. All stops are being pulled, even direct action as we just saw this last week.

Fortunately Trump is holding the blockade which is costing IRGC money hand over fist and will or has ruined their oil pumps when they run out of places to store oil (since they can’t send it) and have to shut down. No need to expend armaments when time alone will do the damage.

“The establishment consensus”

Stop reading right there. Who is the The “establishment consensus”? The same Obama losers who enabled the mullahs to build a nuke anyway. What they are really saying is that Trump has a vice grip on the mullah’s cojones. Gas prices are a worry. Superficial voters might go left. Fingers crossed that the mullahs fold first.

Well, the CFR crew (of whom Mead is most definitely a member) can reliably be counted on to love themselves some Middle Eastern regime change wars and then reliably disappear when they go to Shiite. So, at least Mead is not being the typical neocon coward here. However, even his attempt at a shot in the arm seems pretty feeble:

"War is unpredictable, and Mr. Trump’s critics may yet have their day. While the pressure on the administration is for the moment sustainable, market turmoil or a dramatic collapse in the president’s approval ratings could make a change of course attractive to an often-impulsive administration. Still, for now the president can afford to wait and see how mounting pressure affects the Iranian side. Betting the farm on TACO scenarios seems dangerously premature.

ROFLOL. When they ramp up the propaganda your over the target. Just a few more days, and many of the Iranian oil fields will have to be re-drilled. Trump has them and knows it, time is on Trump’s side.
