Oh, the emotions in the United States of America here in the Year of Our Lord 2026! There's despair. There's anger. There's...well, there's mostly anger. Heck, I tend to be dead inside and the partisan political acrimony has even been getting to me. In a recent VIP column, I wrote that I was taking a brief break from my workday habit of perusing the Opinion sections of The New York Times and Washington Post because I'm starting to worry about that kind of crazy being contagious.
That followed a week or two of me venting in various ways about the state of things in American politics. Then I remembered something very important: I'm rather enjoying President Trump's second term. Seeing the Democrats rend their garments over everything that he does isn't something I should let get me frustrated. It's kind of a schadenfreude-filled bonus.
As I began to return to my typical Zen-like state, I decided it would be fun to trigger the lefties by writing a column that not only likened President Trump to President Abraham Lincoln, but likened today's Democrats to the seditious secessionists (say that three times fast) of the Civil War era. I know I'm not the first conservative pundit to do this. Honestly, I'm surprised at how long it took me to get around to it. I have a lot of lefty trolls and a kajillion prog followers on X; I really should be thinking of triggering them more often.
Even though the circumstances are obviously different, finding parallels between what's happening now and the America of the 1860s isn't difficult for conservatives, mostly because we've all read history books. I am in no way saying that things are as severe right now — families aren't killing each other from opposite sides...

In 1875, just 26% of American colonists favored independence from England.
Sorry, that’s 1776.
If the Civil War was honestly named, it would be called the First Democrat-Republican war.
Still do. We would have avoided Obama.
Of course, now, Illinois is a cesspool of liberalism, high taxes, floundering local economies, and illegal aliens. A few years ago, the state changed the license plate design. The old one had a full headshot of Honest Abe; the current one just half of his face. It's like either he is trying to disconnect from his association with Illinois, or the politicians are trying to force his memory out.
Lincoln was hated in the North too. You think they wanted to send their sons off to died. Ever hear of the draft riots?
You’d think the Secret Service would take note and do a decent job of protecting the President. Currans excuses on Foz with Will Cain were pure bull.
Very probably more than half.
Lincoln was a tyrant who trampled on constitutional rights and trashed the constitution.
My dad was a tyrant too. He really let us kids (and Mom) know who was boss. Sometimes I think if it wasn’t for him, our family would have fallen apart.
The difference is your dad did not have a constitution to uphold. Had your mom wanted to leave and had he knocked her over the head and chained her to the kitchen sink to make sure she didn’t leave, he would not have “saved” the marriage. He would have converted the marriage from one based on consent to one based on force, threats and violence. That would have changed the very nature of the relationship. It would have in fact destroyed the original relationship - not saved it. That would make him a monster and a criminal - not a hero.
Well, between you and me, I think I can tell that story better than anyone here on FR or my brother and sister for that matter.
As for Lincoln and his true legacy, like it or not, no one alive today can touch him.
So, what do you think Lincoln would’ve done as POTUS had he lived to serve out his 2nd term?
Yeah, and it seems like it’s pretty much the same “half” that hates Trump.

And WHY is this so ? I mean, what is the actual ROOT CAUSE?
America has evicted God, and His Son, Jesus Christ, from our culture. The void that eviction created brought in the ‘acceptance’ of homosexuality, infant murder and Trans... and we wonder why our nation is in free-fall.
The irony is that the ‘cure’ is up to you and me. Are YOU willing to call upon this Redeemer Jesus? Are YOU willing to ask Him for His help to rebuild YOUR life ???
For rational counterpoint, https://lneilsmith.org/abelenin.html “The American Lenin.”
Now, would, a modern day Democratic whatever do that??
Opinions about Lincoln are still divided despite a century and a half of non stop government propaganda.
As for what he would have done....that’s difficult to say for sure. He probably would have been able to at least curb the more destructive urges of the Radical Republicans better than Johnson could.
So, Lincoln was our dad and the people were children? Makes more sense as to why some people put him on a pedestal with that perspective. Given that the war was not fought to free slaves and to continue the analogy, that would make the South the children who grew up and no longer needed “dad’s” dictatorial oversight, so they did what grandpa did and rebelled.
Yeah, who knows, he might’ve dumped Johnson as VP and ran with Grant instead! Reconstruction might not have taken as long as it did. Could Lincoln have gone on to the Supreme Court? It’s all so intriguing. When I think about what the Democrats are willing to do “by any means necessary”, and look at what Lincoln or Truman had to do and how they did it, the difference is plain to see.

Apparently Lincoln had sex with men.
"Lincoln's sexual preferences are pieced together via interviews with dozens of scholars, plus never-before-seen letters and photos. As one expert on the 16th president claims, "Lincoln probably slept in the same bed with more men than he did with women.""

And most people don't know he was an Atheist according to William Herndon, his law partner.
Not just an Atheist, but hated Christianity.
