Suspected Somali pirates hijacked a fuel tanker off the northeastern coast of Somalia, according to a local official and the British military.

The vessel was seized on Wednesday in waters between the coastal towns of Hafun and Bandarbeyla in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland along the Indian Ocean.

The tanker had departed from the port of Berbera and was heading to the Somali capital of Mogadishu when it was intercepted, a colonel with the Puntland Maritime Police Force told The Associated Press. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to a journalist.

Piracy off Somalia’s coast, once among the most dangerous in the world, has declined significantly over the past decade due to international naval patrols and improved maritime security. However, sporadic incidents continue to raise concerns about a possible resurgence.

Maybe they needed the practice?

If you don’t keep pirates busy, they might get into trouble..............

Hans: Pirates are fun!

Second Nazi: I didn't say we weren't fun, but fun or not pirates are still the baddies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piracy_in_the_21st_century

Piracy in the Indian Ocean has posed a threat to international shipping since the onset of the Somali Civil War in the early 1990s.[16] By 2005, many international organizations have raised concerns about the increasing number of pirate attacks.[17][18] These acts of piracy disrupt the delivery of shipments, escalated shipping costs, and caused an estimated $6.6 to $6.9 billion in annual losses to global trade, according to Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP).[19] The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) noted that an industry of profiteers emerged around the piracy crisis. Insurance companies, for instance, saw significant profit increase as they raised premium rates in response to the heightened risks.[20]

The fight against piracy in the Indian Ocean was spearheaded by Combined Task Force 150, a multinational coalition task force, that established the Maritime Security Patrol Area (MSPA) within the Gulf of Aden[21] and the Guardafui Channel.[22] By September 2012, the peak of piracy in the region was reportedly over.[23] The International Maritime Bureau noted that pirate attacks had dropped to a six-year low by October 2012, with only one ship attacked during the third quarter compared to thirty-six during the same period in 2011.[24]

By December 2013, the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence reported that pirates had attacked only 9 vessels that year, with no successful hijackings.[25] Control Risks attributed this 90% decline in pirate activity from 2012 levels to several factors: the adoption of best management practices by ship owners and crews, the deployment of armed private security personnel on board vessels, the presence of significant naval forces, and the development of onshore security forces.[26]

might be their only successful pirate attack in recent years

What do they need oil for in Somalia?

They will try to sell it. The primary customer will be whoever they stole it from.

We need to burn them to the ground.

Just wondering:

Who owns the oil before delivery? The producer that loaded it onto the ship? The ship owner? The shipping company? The company in Mogadishu that ordered the oil?

Wouldn't be surprised if the Somalis stole their own oil, sold it on the black market and collected the insurance ( if that's possible).

How do you know they’re Somalis? They all have heads shaped like light bulbs. (I’m betting that’s the real reason Johan wears a turban all the time.)

Puntland pirates seize tanker headed for their Somali enemy. Puntland declared independence from Somalia. I don’t know why, but pretty much any reason would be good enough, I suspect.

Somalia is like Yemen - just a waste of space. Remove all Americans, cut off all aid, build a wall around the place and leave them to their own devices.
