'To our enemies … You can run but you’ll only die tired,' immigrant from Vietnam warns
When Hung Cao was 4 years old, the U.S. military rescued him to freedom, evacuating him and his immediate family—seven people, two suitcases—from Saigon just hours before the capital of South Vietnam fell to the communists.
What was a stroke of good fortune for Cao has worked out pretty well so far for America, too. Cao has spent a lifetime since then repaying the U.S. He graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis and served as a Navy diver and explosive ordnance disposal officer with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia, retiring from active duty in 2021 as a captain. In 2024, as a candidate for U.S. Senate from Virginia, he spoke at the Republican National Convention: "My name’s Hung Cao, and America saved my life. I wish he had been elected Senator fromVirginia, but maybe we're better off with him as SecNav.
The article does not mention he started as an enlisted sailor. He was accepted to Annapolis from the enlisted ranks.
Very rare indeed. Impressive man.
Agreed - I was so disappointed when he lost the Senate race to the execrable Clown Kaine, but I think Cao’s talents would have been wasted there. I totally believe Secretary of the Navy was/is his destiny.
I didn’t know how rare that was. I know a young man who enlisted in the Army. At Ranger school his commander called him in and told him that as soon as the school was done, he was headed to West Point.
Much more common for talented enlisted to go to Officer’s Candidate Schools.
In the late 1970s, my BIL was an enlisted Army special forces medic in the 82nd Airborne. The Army sent him to college for his undergraduate degree and then medical school at Uniform Services Academy (Bethesda, MD). He became a radiologist and retired a Lt Colonel. After he got out of the Army, he made about a million per year as a radiologist.
He had a great campaign ad when running for Senate. I suppose you can still google it and view it.
