Britain faces an influx of 4.4 million immigrants if the Green Party wins the next election, a leading economist has predicted.
Simon French, chief economist at Panmure Liberum, expects the UK’s population to hit 75.9 million by 2034 if the Left-wing party gains power at the next election and relaxes border restrictions.
That is up from 70.4 million today, with Mr French attributing the net increase to immigration rather than any increase in the birth rate.
Current forecasts predict that the UK’s population will reach 71.5 million by 2029.
Mr French’s population forecasts are based on a string of the Greens’ current policies.
That includes giving free advice to undocumented migrants, including those arriving across the Channel in small boats, and helping them to “regularise their status without penalty for being undocumented”.
The Green Party also pledges to “treat all migrants as if they are citizens” and to “abolish the no recourse to public funds condition”, which can be used to limit benefit claims.
