Many US Catholics are dismayed by Trump's unprecedented broadside at the first American pope

A majority of U.S. Catholic voters supported Donald Trump in his 2024 presidential victory. Yet across the broad Catholic political spectrum – even among conservative-leaning bishops – there is dismay over Trump’s unprecedented verbal assault on Pope Leo XIV, the first American to lead their church.

Leo says he is sharing a Gospel message and not directly attacking Trump or anyone else with his appeals for peace and criticism of attitudes fueling the war.

Criticism of Trump came from Archbishop Paul Coakley, head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and from Minnesota-based Bishop Robert Barron, who only a few days ago was applauding Trump as an Easter guest at the White House. Barron called the president’s remarks “entirely inappropriate and disrespectful” and urged him to apologize.

Bad unforced error. There is an ongoing coordinated effort to portray the Trump administration as anti-Catholic to push them back to the Democratic plantation. Trump just gave them ammo. On top is that social media post portraying Trump as Jesus. Trump needs to get rid of that grifter Paula White. Reminds me of when the Beatles compared themselves to Jesus in popularity.

I do not think Leo is some innocent bystander. He recently met Obama hatchet man David Axelrod. There is only one reason to meet the Jew Axelrod; coordinate the Trump is anti-Catholic campaign.

Yes, it was an unforced error, however I am not going to start believing any AP story on what people thin., People see it as the problem it was, I am unsure though as to how much impact this error will have given, he is not playing into it anymore.

If a conservative was not a Christian then this has no impact on them, if they are, Trumps stating he never thought it meant that and pulling it should be enough to quell the concern as we are all called to forgive AND Trumps works far outdo anything on the left as to being aligned with God’s word, such as on abortion and personal freedom.

IMO Christians who continue with the rage on this are leftists first and are using this as an opportunity, I do not believe this actually impacts them in a spiritual way, they are ideology first, their religion is one of convenance.

There is so much that can be said.

First an apology in some sort about the picture and any inadvertent insults to Christian’s that took his actions the wrong way.

Then double down on how even though he respects the Popes office that the Pope should stick with religion and his own divided congregation and avoid being political.

Is Pope Leo the protégé of Pope Francis and continuing the advancement of Liberation Theology? The Gospels can be selectively quoted until the cows come home, but his actions tell the true story.

Cynical Publius
@CynicalPublius

I probably need to sign off for the day.

I am disgusted beyond belief at the people who suddenly are acting pious for political reasons when they have forever vocally supported:

1. Murdering unborn children by the bushel.

2. Nuns being persecuted for adhering to the doctrines of the Catholic Church.

3. The mutilation of confused children to satisfy their parents’ Munchausen Syndrome.

4. The beatification of Barack Obama, Anthony Fauci and Robert Mueller as holy figures throughout the media.

5. Harsh criticism of any Trump Administration official who favorably mentions God or Jesus.

6. The ending of religious assembly during COVID.

7. A generalized disdain for orthodox Christian and Catholic persons and beliefs.

8. Hatred for the most orthodox, intellectual and Catholic of recent Popes, Pope Benedict.

9. Embrace of all manner of perversions enumerated specifically in the Bible as sins.

10. Silence on the murder of 30,000+ Persians by the Iranian mullahs and the violent murder and persecution of Christians in large swathes of the Muslim world.

Pope Leo is using the Gospel as an excuse to meddle in purely political affairs, and politicians throughout America who hate the Gospel are using feigned faith as a political cudgel.

It is disgusting beyond belief.

OUT.

Shut up. I don’t expect an apology from Trump. You should apologize for what you wrote.

Catholic Charities self identified as “the largest refugee resettlement agency in the world,” resettling approximately 18% of refugees arriving in the US each year.

The Catholic Church has emerged as one of the largest government contractors of immigration services.

From 2013 to 2022, Catholic Relief Services was the single largest recipient of funds from the USAID, receiving a collective $4.6 billion in that timeframe.

Federal funding covered more than 95% of what the USCCB spent on refugee and migrant programs in recent years. In 2012, 93% of the USCCB’s spending on refugee and unaccompanied child work was covered by American taxpayers the conference raised only $1.4 million from its own church members while receiving $65.9 million from the federal government.

I don't want to involve myself in any roundhouses directed against the Pope, or against American Roman Catholics.

All I'll say is that, for many American Roman Catholics, the current Pope is a cross that they'll simply have to learn to bear.

I liked Ratzinger - and JPII was definitely a "good'un," though.

Regards,

As for the meme that kicked this all off, to paraphrase Benjamin Franklin...

Pres. Trump is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

God bless you, Mr. President.

Something I learned about Catholics is that for many of the most devout it is about Catholicism and not Christianity, meaning that they are members of the organization and see everything through that organization, which accounts for my conversations with neighbors who vote democrat yet are very humble, movie like, almost Catholic peasant like, submissive and devoted followers of the Catholic robes from priest to pope, who see the republican party as the party of the rich and whites, the non-Catholics and uncharitable, as against social justice and the charity of free health care and government welfare and open borders.

Politics is all about marketing and approval, ratings, etc.. that’s was my focus.

I don’t need an apology and it seems you don’t need an apology.

Question is what people need in the political world. Words are easy.

This Catholic is distressed by the Popes unprecedented broadsides against Trump in the political arena.

If he stayed to non political issues, he wouldn’t get called out.

I have no problem with Trump criticizing the pope. You get in the political arena you get push back. Stay in your lale bishop of Rome. That said, it was incredibly dumb to do.
