Approximately 1,350 union workers at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri, are escalating their strike against Olin Winchester as they demand better wages and stronger contracts.

Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 778 have been on strike since April 4 after overwhelmingly rejecting a contract offer from company management.

...

The IAM Local 778 negotiating committee met with company representatives earlier in the week. The company indicated it would provide future dates to continue discussions.

The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant is a critical facility in the U.S. defense industrial base. Workers manufacture 5.56 mm, 7.62 mm and .50-caliber rifle ammunition for the military.

MISSION

Execute contract oversight for the production of small caliber ammunition, the operations, maintenance, environmental stewardship, and modernization of the Lake City Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) and operate the North American Regional Test Center to provide quality munitions to the Warfighter while ensuring the strategic readiness of the production infrastructure to meet the demands of current and future multi-domain warfighting requirements.

HISTORY
LCAAP was established as the Lake City Ordnance Plant in 1940 as one of 12 small-caliber ammunition plants constructed in support of World War II. LCAAP has operated continuously, with the exception of the five years between WWII and the Korean War. The installation was renamed the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in 1963.

Through the 1970s, the Small-Caliber Ammunition Modernization Program modernized certain production processes with high-speed, computer controlled, automated production systems. The plant continued to modernize and increase efficiencies through the 1990s, but did not require a great production increase in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in the 1990s.

After the 2001 terrorist attacks, workload increased significantly in support of Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom requirements. During this period, LCAAP established a link production capability, while modernizing to reach an annual production capacity of 1.6 billion rounds. Today, LCAAP plays a critical role in sustaining the Army’s small-caliber ammunition supply chain to ensure Joint Warfighter readiness.

I don’t know what’s worse....

The author’s bio, or the blurb at the bottom of the article.

Fair and balanced, my derriere.

The only comment from management is a short, single sentence on continuing negotiations.

Why do I think the author of this propaganda piece left out quite a bit of info.

Assuming she looked for any.

The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (Lake City AAP) is located on 3,935 acres at the intersection of Highways 7 and 78 in Independence, in eastern Jackson County. In 1941, the Remington Arms Co. established the plant to manufacture and test small caliber ammunition for the U.S. Army. Lake City AAP is the largest small arms (5.56 - 20 mm) manufacturing plant in the world. With the exception of the five-year period between the end of World War II and the beginning of the conflict in Korea, this government-owned, contractor-operated facility has been in continuous production since October 1941.

Historical waste handling and disposal practices of hazardous substances; including oil, grease, solvents, explosives and metals, led to widespread contamination at the site. Lake City AAP was placed on the Superfund National Priorities List on Aug. 21, 1987. Today, Lake City AAP continues to produce munitions for the nation’s military services. For information about current permitted hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal activities, visit Lake City Army Ammunition Plant.

Many people have heard the story of Enrico Fermi and his team constructing the first self-sustaining atomic “pile” at Stagg Field in Chicago, under the squash courts.

But they probably don’t know why he did it there. There was a government contracted company that was supposed to make it. But they were on strike.

So Fermi basically said “the hell with these guys” and employed off season football players to do all the work moving tons of graphite blocks around and such.

Fire their mangy union asses. Joe Pedo imported 20 million freeloader knuckledraggers who will take the jobs. They’ll do any job the union thugs don’t want to do.

In a world without unions most people would be industrial slaves. If all power comes down from the top then you have an aristocracy, not a democracy.

Unions are critical in what we have now, but have outgrown its usefulness. I say good riddance.

The only purpose of a union is to keep the people who should have been fired.

Is 20k rounds of Green Tip Lake City enough to have on hand at all times?

Then again, that could be all the lawyers would allow management to say. Typically, management limits public comments during strikes.
