Understanding the Iran Ceasefire
The American Conservative ^ | 4/8/26 | Jude Russo

Posted on 04/08/2026 2:13:21 PM PDT by EnderWiggin1970

No shortage of surprises around here. President Donald Trump, less than half a day after announcing his intention to destroy “a whole civilization” if the Iranians didn’t reopen the Hormuz, declared via Truth Social that the Pakistanis had brokered a two-week ceasefire on the premise that the Iranian 10-point framework is a “workable basis” for a peace deal.

This is a bit of a headscratcher to everyone who has actually seen the Iranian framework, which, among other things, asserts the Islamic Republic’s right to uranium enrichment, institutionalizes an Iranian-Omani toll system in the Hormuz, and demands immediate sanctions relief. The rollout of the ceasefire was itself extremely strange: a choreographed-looking request on Twitter from the Pakistani prime minister and a quick acceptance from Trump on the strength of negotiations that nobody has actually been sure are actually happening. But, assuming all goes well, the war is on pause today, and that is in itself a good thing.

The Iranian media are spiking the football about how this is an American “retreat” and so on and so on (and on and on: The prose style of Persian TV is pretty longwinded). And, if Trump is actually sincere about the use of the 10-point framework, they may be forgiven for seeing things that way; if the final deal is within sniffing distance of the framework, it concedes several American redlines of yesteryear and throws in some extras that weren’t even on the table before the war started, like Iranian suzerainty in the strait.

The protagonists (US/Israel/Iranian people) can be understood to have had (each with their own prioritization) the following strategic goals in their conflict with the Iranian regime:

1. Elimination of support for proxy armies and terrorist forces threatening Israel.
2. Regime change in Iran.
3. Elimination of Iran's nuclear weapons program.

At this point the conflict has failed to achieve points 1 and 2; on #3 it has presumably had partial success, while simultaneously greatly motivating the regime to weaponize its stockpile of enriched uranium to be ready for the next round of conflict. I expect an urgent Saudi nuclear weapons program to launch any day now.

On the flip side, ground has been lost in the form of acceptance of Iranian control of the Straits of Hormuz. My guess at this point is the IRGC will use continued Israeli fighting in Lebanon as a bargaining chip to solidify their control over the Straits. The US was driven to pull back by a few aircraft lost and the economic pain inflicted generally on the globe.

America's enemies are taking notes.

The Vice President just announced there seems to exist 3 different 10 point plans, and none have been printed and signed.

Right, and POTUS said the same at 1PM in the following Truth statement:
_______
Numerous Agreements, Lists, and Letters are being sent out by people that have absolutely nothing to do with the U.S.A. / Iran Negotiation, in many cases, they are total Fraudsters, Charlatans, and WORSE. They will be rapidly exposed after our Federal Investigation is completed. There is only one group of meaningful “POINTS” that are acceptable to the United States, and we will be discussing them behind closed doors during these Negotiations. These are the POINTS that are the basis on which we agreed to a CEASEFIRE. It is something that is reasonable, and can easily be dispensed with. It’s very much like Fake News CNN last night, headlining a “source” that had no power or authority to write a Letter claiming great authority. President DONALD J. TRUMP
______

In other words, the 10 points he found “workable” have only been discussed behind closed doors, so it’s not same 10 conditions that Iran demanded.

If that oil isn't being shipped to the U.S., many may not care. It is a change in the world order though. The U.S. won't be guaranteeing that the strait stays open. Let the Arabs dig a canal through the UAE.

Iran is demanding reparations and that obviously wasn’t going to happen so Trump proposed Iran set up a toll booth on the Strait of Hormuz instead to pay for their losses. The fact that Trump is willing to grant them permission to set up such a toll booth tells you all you need to know about who is actually winning this war so far. Can you imagine the reaction of freepers if instead it was Biden allowing this?

“America’s enemies are taking notes. “

They witnessed POTUS’ total surrender and realized they could be next.

Why this will always be convoluted:

The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. Europe (Israel updated for modern times) has a set of primary interests, which to us have none, or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves, by artificial ties, in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities... it is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world; so far, I mean, as we are now at liberty to do it; for let me not be understood as capable of patronizing infidelity to existing engagements.

— George Washington's Farewell Address

The reason why this is convoluted: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$...

The Afghanistan pull out was embarrassing enough but that’s going to be nothing compared to the loss we experience when Iran kicks us totally out of the Gulf. The rest of the world will think we are a paper tiger after this. And our Gulf allies now know that we were unable to protect their infrastructure that they once counted on. The balance of power in the world is shifting and not in a way that benefits America.

Yes, pretty much that.

This is on Rubio. Has secretary of state he should be coordinating the text and the signatures. If the same text is not being signed then there is no agreement.

The bogus 10 point plans don’t really need to be investigated. They came from Wall Street. There’s no need to dig further.

The only thing that matters is Iran:
- maintains control of the strait
- keeps its nuclear material
- keeps its ability to project power outside its own borders

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS

The USA has ‘hidden’ enemies that play like wolves in sheep clothing.

Do the Iranians we’re talking to have control over the enriched uranium?

Getting that uranium in the hands of the IAEA and in a safe place is the top task.

It shouldn't be a "headscratcher" to anyone who understands how President Trump negotiates.

Just because Iran put these items on the list doesn't mean they're going to get them.

All this list contains is the subject areas that Iran wants to discuss. Nobody is bound by the results that Iran said they want.

That's why Trump said he could work with this framework, because he has lots of things to say about the topics on the list.

“Iranian control of the Straits of Hormuz”

US Navy aircraft carriers can be protected, right?

Torpedoes and anti-ship missiles have been around for decades. All US Navy warships should have means of dealing with them, most especially escort vessels.

Drones have been used in Ukraine for over four years. The US Navy should have protective means by now.

That’s not how non-socialist/non-communist economies work.

Free market, capitalist economies - like the US - don’t “buy” oil/fuel for the “country”, as socialists and communist systems do.

Rather, private company engage in selling and buying. They, in turn, sell products (finished/refined fuels) to other private companies. And eventually, the consumer product - like gas at the pump - gets sold to consumers.

Unless one wants to get a “little bit socialist” or really, a “little bit communist”?

Doesn’t matter. Oil is a globally traded commodity on the free market. Oil pumped out of the ground by a US company and/or refined and sold on the open market? The capitalists that spent the money to make it possible shouldn’t be under any obligation to limit their market. If the global, prevailing price is X? They should be able to sell it for X.

Otherwise? People should at least stop complaining about socialism and communism. Both “work” (or more accurately, FAIL) because the state decides who and at what price you can sell.
