WASHINGTON (TNND) — White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the Save America Act during an exchange at an event with Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk.
Leavitt and Kirk attended an event at George Washington University in Washington, where a student yelled out and asked if President Donald Trump’s efforts to pass the SAVE Act was worth the risk.
The student said there were only a few hundred cases of voter fraud and asked if it was worth tightening restrictions on federal elections.
“There is certainly much more, I believe, voter fraud in this country, and I’m sure those statistics back it up, than what you cited with one survey,” Leavitt said in response to the question, according to the New York Post.
She then asked the student why [he was] okay with voter fraud in the U.S. and said it was insane that voter ID isn’t required for national elections.
“It’s a common-sense piece of legislation, and Democrats would be wise to get on board with this, because the only people in the world, except for maybe this gentleman who asked the question, seem to be politicians in this city who don’t want voter ID and proof of citizenship in American elections,” the press secretary said.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act requires proof of U.S. citizenship when individuals register to vote in federal elections.
Florida GOP Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna said last month that the only way the SAVE Act will be passed is if it’s attached to the FISA.
