Maine Millionaire Tax Likely to Become New Law
WGME-TV ^ | 04-03-2026 | Ariana St Pierre

Posted on 04/03/2026 1:27:37 PM PDT by Tudorfly

Liberal Maine Democrats control Maine State Government: Governor, Senate, House. They are poised to impose a 2% tax on the 2,600 tax paying Mainers who earn a million dollars or more per year. The governor said she expects the state will see added income tax revenue of $150 million over the next two years.

There is no mention in the news story about the likelihood of any of those 2,600 taxpayers changing their legal residency to income tax free states in response to this new law. Nor is there any discussion regarding the possibility of future legislation lowering the tax surcharge threshold, which would affect even more taxpayers.

One thing about liberals: They never consider the long-term affects of their feel-good policies.

Shut down coal-fired power plants!
But no thought of what will replace them.

Tax millionaires!
But no thought of them leaving.

Etc.

No, she won't. Many or most of them will leave. Liberals never learn.

Because illegal Chinese pot farm people don’t file income taxes or don’t include their illegal Chinese pot farm income if they otherwise file income taxes. Nor shall we discuss the corrupt governor’s corrupt brother, who has been involved in numerous illegal Chinese pot farm schemes in Maine.

The very rich can and will move. The affluent will just get screwed. This BS is just punitive, it will make no real difference to the finances of the State at all.

She expects that. When they leave the state she’ll consider it unexpected and then demand her son play in women’s sports.

Liberals always predict taxation yield based on a static model.
In real life, it is a dynamic model. Impose a new tax, people will try to avoid it.

ALL 2600 of those millionaires should leave the state.

come to Florida.

we have no income tax, no property tax (on your residence), and sales tax is 5%.

in Maine, if you had an AGI of $1m and owned a $2m home...

state income tax: ~$75,000
property tax: ~$25,000

that’s $100k in your pocket EVERY YEAR.

which would pay your monthly on a $2m loan over 30yrs @ 5% (~$10k/mon) ...

which would give you a $4m home essentially for free
(assuming you sold your $2m home in ME and put it all on the new $4m home in FL)

All liberals can see from their policies is more money and how to spend it. Nothing else matters.

State Sales tax in Florida is 6 Percent

Most counties add at least another 1 Percent so most places it is 7 Percent

And I do pay property tax every November, as a Florida resident.

Yes, there is no state income tax. Car license/tags are cheap. Insurance is high.

To leftist rich people: Texas is horrible hot nasty racist state filled with lots of poisonous things. You don’t want to come here.

To conservatives: Come on down! It’s actually a very nice place.

I would imagine the people making $1M a year in Maine have been making $1 M a year for many, many years. $1M in Maine is usually Bank Presidents, Hospital Presidents, Forest Product people…and then really, really old (Think Rockefeller old) money along the shore. I worked for a bank in Maine. Old Maine money is New York money that moved in the 1900’s.

I am also sure they are on the phones to their bankers in Boston about how to move their income to off shore trusts and themselves to other states.

If this brings in a quarter of what they are projecting in Year 2, I would be surprised. But have at it….
