IRGC takes de facto control of Iran government amid deepening power struggle
Iran International ^ | 1 April 2026 | Staff

Rising tensions between the Pezeshkian administration and Iran’s military leadership have pushed the president into a “complete political deadlock,” with the Revolutionary Guard effectively assuming control over key state functions, informed sources told Iran International.

The IRGC has blocked presidential appointments and decisions while erecting a security perimeter around the core of power, effectively sidelining the government from executive control.

Efforts by Masoud to appoint a new intelligence minister last Thursday collapsed under direct pressure from IRGC chief-commander Ahmad Vahidi, sources with knowledge of the situation told Iran International.

All proposed candidates, including Hossein Dehghan, were rejected. Vahidi is said to have insisted that, given wartime conditions, all critical and sensitive leadership positions must be selected and managed directly by the IRGC until further notice.

Under Iran’s political system, presidents have traditionally nominated intelligence ministers only after securing the approval of the Supreme Leader, who holds ultimate authority over key security portfolios.

However, with the condition and whereabouts of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei unclear in recent weeks, the IRGC is now effectively blocking the president from advancing its preferred candidate, further consolidating its grip over the state’s security apparatus.

Security cordon around Khamenei Jr.

Pezeshkian has repeatedly sought an urgent meeting with Mojtaba Khamenei in recent days, but all requests have gone unanswered, with no contact established.

Informed sources say a “military council” composed of senior IRGC officers now exercises full control over the core decision-making structure, enforcing a security cordon around Mojtaba Khamenei and preventing government reports on the country’s situation from reaching him.

Speculation has also emerged regarding whether Mojtaba Khamenei’s health condition may be contributing to the current power dynamics.

Efforts to remove Hejazi

At the same time, an unprecedented internal crisis is reportedly unfolding within Mojtaba Khamenei’s inner circle. Some close associates are said to be pushing to remove Ali Asghar Hejazi, a powerful security figure in the Supreme Leader’s office.

The tensions are rooted in Hejazi’s explicit opposition to Mojtaba Khamenei’s potential succession. He had previously warned members of the Assembly of Experts that Mojtaba lacks the necessary qualifications for leadership and argued that hereditary succession is incompatible with the principles outlined by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to informed sources.

Hejazi reportedly cautioned that elevating Mojtaba would effectively hand full control of the country to the IRGC and permanently sideline civilian institutions.

In the first week of the ongoing war, Israeli media reported that Hejazi had been targeted in an airstrike in Tehran. However, later reports indicated that he survived the attack.

IRGC apparently is keeping the "Supreme Leader" as a de facto hostage.

Keep in mind Russia, China and other all have “senior advisors” waiting in the wings who are dying to test tactics on American forces and who can prosecute the war in the absence of “leaders”.

Infrastructure soon to go. Let the Chinese and Russians test the ‘Large population of Refugees to their respective countries’ tactic.

Whatever else may be said, I believe the Chinese and Russians are too smart to fall for that trick.

It’s an increasingly short list.

About 3-5 guys are all that is left of the top three tiers of the IRGC.

Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi of the IRGC is the CIC and the de facto real leader of Iran.

Ayatollah Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i is the head of the judiciary. He’s the asshole who signs the death warrants for protestors.

Whack these two, and the bench is basically depleted.

The 200,000 IRGC troops and their military hardware are housed in 31 deep silos across Iran. I hope that Trump has planned to drop bunker busters on several of their silos to get their ears ringing as a parting gesture before he leaves in 2 to 3 weeks.

They are admitting who they are, that this is about money and power.

The next step is to get them trying to save their skins.

They know they are so vile they won't admit defeat. They must be killed.

That means the people of Iran need to finish the cleanup. They need to be armed, organized, and supplied, in that order to form a new government.

All of that makes this war into a slog unless we can find and equip an internal opposition. Other than the Kurds and the MEK, both of which are unacceptable, I haven't heard a thing about that.

The IRGC is just about the worst element of the dictatorship and least likely to any political moderation - they are born entirely from the theology of the Mullahs - spear of Islamic theocratic enforcement. They are known in the west for their roles outside Iran but their domestic loyalty to the Mullahs is supreme and can be relied on by the Mullahs for domestic enforcement roles with supreme trust.

If this is who Trump is negotiating with, the people of Iran are in for a big surprise and even bigger disappointment.

They are “Revolutionary Guards”. IE KGB trained protectors of KGB control.

They have to be rooted out by force.

Well, I expect us to move on Kharg Island, capture it, and then declare victory. I mean, do any of you trust dirty, lying Muslims? We need to get out of Dresden, the place. Maybe losing 1/4 of your population will make you see the light,or the extermination continues.. Islamicists haven’t had any balls for real battle since Saladin. They are pussys who hide behind cellphone bombs and women and children.

We used this strategy in Japan. We were fully prepared to depopulate Japan and make it the 51st state. The Emperor knew this.

No, it’s the president and the Artesh. The entire civilian/secular arm of the Iranian government and military is untouched by hostilities.

It may be that the point of the negotiations are to surface the people who need to be taken out.

We’re not saying anything new.

There is no possibility that Israel aided by US sigint is not working hard on this right now—and has been for some time.

So the real question is how have these guys managed to avoid detection?

It sounds like how Iran is run is more like a military dictatorship with Mullahs being the figurehead.
Hmmm....

“So the real question is how have these guys managed to avoid detection?”

In an article posted yesterday, they are not using any electronics, passing orders through intermediaries, and hiding in a hole somewhere.

The result has been very disorganized and delayed CIC.
