End to airport misery in sight as Senate approves deal to end DHS shutdown — without Dem immigration demands
NY Post ^ | Mar. 27, 2026 | Chris Bradford and Samuel Chamberlain

Senators approved a compromise measure early Friday to fund most of the Department of Homeland Security through the end of September, taking a major step toward ending the 42-day partial shutdown that has seen hundreds of airport security workers quit after missing paychecks and snarled travel nationwide.

The agreement, passed by voice vote before senators departed Washington for a two-week recess for Easter and Passover, will be considered by the House later Friday morning.

The last-ditch deal does not include any of the demands Democrats have placed on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — including that agents be barred from wearing masks and operate under tougher warrant requirements to detain illegal migrants.

The bill does not provide funding for ICE or Border Patrol, but those subagencies already received billions of dollars under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed into law by President Trump this past July and immigration enforcement has gone on uninterrupted by the shutdown.

Nevertheless, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) proclaimed that Democrats had “held the line.”

Now we know. It's the DemonRats that actually caved since the preexisting funding for ICE under the BBB wasn't touched and they didn't ge the defenesration of ICE they were trying for.

HUGE congatulations to the NY Post for accurate reporting!!!

That’s good. The GOP should rub it in their faces. It seems the airline passengers are pay as you go for the TSA people. They’ve been paying for it all along but getting nothing but long lines for it.

Having images of ICE handing out bottles of water to passenger waiting in line, and one officer saving a baby's life by performing the Heimlich maneuver, etc. were too much PR optics that the Democrats couldn't allow to continue.

More of this please ... and SEVERELY lower gas prices ... before the Midterms.

Sadly, though ... I think too many of the GOP are NOT conservative at all ... and WANT to lose.

They caved AS SOON AS TRUMP ANNOUNCED HE WAS GOING TO PAY THEM WITHOUT SEBATE APPROVAL!

This “victory” will make the Republicans feel mighty guilty so now they can torpedo the Save Act to redeem themselves.

Schmucky reminds me of the warden in “Shawshank Redemption” an absolutely loathsome person who sensibly provided his own remedy.

Right.

I saw one thread posted here on FR, and I have spent about the last half hour looking on the Internet, and every single article on the first two pages of a search, every single headline I read out there says some variant of “DHS Bill Signed by Senate but ICE is not funded.”

As if it were a complete Democrat victory. And people will bite on that, even here on FR.

But your post is excellent when you wrote: “HUGE congatulations to the NY Post for accurate reporting!!!”

The House Amend the bill to include funding for ICE and CBP and send it back to the Senate!

The Senate still in session… they just left but officially the senate is in session

As the minority party they get all the perks of being congress critters, and none of the blame...

BS this is the same concession deal the DNC has been offering for the past 3 weeks. As soon as Trump said he’d find the TSA with an XO then Thune turned around and stabbed Trump in the back to deprive him of a victory.

Note that Thune didn’t even have the guts to keep the Senate in session over Easter to pass the SAVE act. This is BS all around.

My thoughts exactly. They were staring down the possibility that Trump could “Fix the problem”, and they’d get NOTHING from the whole thing, so they backed down.

This “victory” will make the Republicans feel mighty guilty so now they can torpedo the Save Act to redeem themselves.

This, sadly, is a most salient point. Is there a more evil institution than the Democrat/Communist Party?

..Maybe, the concomitant evil of spineless, corrupted RINOs?

Not so. Demos got a victory out of this since ICE funding is out of the bill. They can tell their NPC’s that they succeeded in getting DHS back on line but denied ICE.

Now, any ICE additional funding will have to be fought out again later on — when DNC controls congress after the midterms.

This was a GOP surrender.

“The bill does not provide funding for ICE or Border Patrol, but those subagencies already received billions of dollars under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed into law by President Trump this past July and immigration enforcement has gone on uninterrupted by the shutdown.”

So if ICE and BP were funded already, why was funding for ICE and BP in the House bill the Dems were holding hostage? It was nice to give the Dems nothing in exchange for ending the crisis they created, but how long is the Big Beautiful Bill funding going to last? It will be interesting to see if the Illegal Immigration Party replays this game, or if they learned enough of a lesson from it to try some other destructive means to protect illegal immigration.
