A student at Stanford University opened up about the disturbing ways in which Chinese Communist Party agents allegedly stalked her, mentioning her mother, demanding she delete material on her phone, and harassing her with a blitz of calls.
Elsa Johnson, a junior majoring in East Asia studies, testified to the House Committee on Education & the Workforce on Thursday about how the chilling alleged “transnational repression” against her began and ripped Stanford for being “very reluctant to engage with me” on it.
“I’m here because I was personally targeted by a suspected agent of the Chinese Communist Party while conducting research at Stanford,” Johnson, the editor-in-chief of the Stanford Review, recalled.
The alleged spying began while she was doing research at the Hoover Institution during the spring of her freshman year, “focused on Chinese industry and military tactics.”
Soon thereafter, a man who called himself Charles Chen connected with her via social media, offering to give her a paid trip to China and pressing her for details on her personal background.
“Then he publicly commented on one of my Instagram posts in Mandarin, asking me to delete screenshots I had taken of our conversation,” she recalled. “I do not know how he knew I had these screenshots.”
Chen had photos of Stanford on his profile, giving her the initial impression that he may be tied to the elite school, but the FBI confirmed that he wasn’t actually affiliated with it.
Johnson believes Chen was acting on behalf of China’s Ministry of State Security and had targeted at least 10 female students since 2020.
She began doing investigative reporting on the apparent Chinese espionage, but then it worsened.

Years ago I attended a weeklong lecture by the Dalai Lama at Lehigh University. Every day the lot next to the lecture hall was filled with Communist Chinese protestors, shouting, screaming and waving signs critical of the Dalai Lama.
I found it odd that so many people, must have been a hundred, would gather to oppose a man teaching “peace.”
These people were controlled by the CCP and would lose their ability to be in the USA unless they protested for the CCP.
There was no overt “Free Tibet” message from the Dalai Lama.
Remember Charlie Trie and the Bill Clinton political contributions?
I’m sure Americans can protest outside of Chinese universities too, right?
Every Chinese national in the US works for the CCP whether they want to or not. Best to send them all home.

Completely true. The Chicoms have ‘police stations’ in the US to keep tabs on their nationals. They will threaten families back in China if they don’t comply. Much like their buddies in Iran. Just because you don’t want it to be true doesn’t make it not true.
If there is one, there are more. My wife, from the PRC, was never followed or coerced to act as a spy or move information in any manner. She is a naturalized citizen, voted for Trump twice and will tongue lash anyone who is woke, socialist, or just stupid. She earned a Master's Degree in Digital Signal Processing.

Just because your wife wasn’t approached doesn’t mean it’s not true. I’ve done business in China for decades. Lived there for many years and the Chinese people I know said this. So just because you have an anecdote of one person doesn’t mean the CCP doesn’t a. send nationals to spy b. threaten nationals in the US to spy. Don’t be so sensitive.

Yes Hypocracy, you are 100%. I have close ties to the Chinese community in the US. The CCP is literally everywhere in their lives, watching, recording, and exploiting to its benefit. Especially at the universities.
They threaten, their families, or use blackmail. Sometimes violence. In return the majority of the Chinese - which really don’t want to do it and prefer America - feel like they have no choice.
I’ve seen it personally in the universities. And in the tech industry (massive infiltration there and in our defense contractor networks - you could almost say the CCP controls our IT networks to an extent). And, unfortunately, even in places of worship I’ve heard “US Citizens” born and raised in Hong Kong go on and on about the religious freedom in China that they experience when they go back to visit family. I know that’s an outright lie on the religious freedom issue because I’ve been to China and seen how the CCP holds all people of faith by the throat.
And yes, there are CCP “police stations” disguised as small business offices or apartments that are used as homebases to track Chinese in America.
And its not always the immigrants. You’d be surprised how many 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th generation Chinese born here in the staes and 100% American in every way, even very conservative and Republicans, that the CCP are tracking right now.
Question is - why would they track them? Logical answer is in time of war they’ll either kill, kidnap, or exploit them. So if you Chinese origin family members you should always stay aware and prepare for such situations.
By ‘all’ I mean all are on the table when it comes to the chicoms. Not that all are actually being coerced or work for them. Just that all are considered targets for the chicoms if they are viewed as useful.
Wait till we get 600,000 more chinese “students”
