After two days of training, TSA says ICE personnel are ready to help at airports/barf
Government Executive ^ | 25/3/26 | Eric Katz

Posted on 03/26/2026 8:07:09 AM PDT by Eleutheria5

Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel are equipped to assist airport screeners after receiving two days of training, the head of the Transportation Security Administration told lawmakers on Wednesday, who said the agents and officers are checking travelers’ identification and managing crowd control.

Ha Nguyen McNeill, the current TSA chief, repeatedly expressed her gratitude to ICE for easing the burden on her workforce during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing. The agency is facing severe shortages as employees increasingly call out due to the ongoing Homeland Security Department shutdown, which has forced staff to work without immediate pay. ICE began deploying to airports on Monday after President Trump ordered them to do so over the weekend.

Earlier in her testimony, McNeil lamented that TSA has lost more than 1,500 employees over the course of the two extended shutdowns this fiscal year. Replacing those workers before major events like the upcoming World Cup would prove difficult, she said, because TSA screeners require six months of training before they can conduct their jobs.

McNeil said her agency had trained ICE employees “for several days,” before correcting herself that the training began on Monday.

She called the manning of TSA's document reader machine and directing queueing "non-specialized functions" that ICE staff could more easily take on. When ICE oversees those types of activities, she said, TSA staff can focus on more specialized functions.

“It’s gone extremely well,” McNeil said of ICE’s airport deployment.

Democrats pounced on the divergence of training required for ICE staff assisting TSA and TSA employees themselves, suggesting the gap between the two demonstrated the deployments were not a serious effort to boost airport security.

“Today is Wednesday, you said they started Monday,” said Rep. Troy Carter, D-La., “which spells out exactly our fear...”

ICE agents are already trained, many of them before they ever joined ICE, in military and/or law enforcement, and then there's the ICE training, which Katz does not allude to.

It's like a trained police officer who was in the Marines being grilled on whether he's qualified to become a mall cop. What a joke.

I was just coming to say that they are already trained in law enforcement. They don’t need another 6 month course to know how to enforce the law.

There is also somebody who spent a lifetime in enforcing immigration who would be supervising all the agents and arrests.

Training must be about 15 minutes from the TSA agents I’ve dealt with. 0 people skills and 0 common sense.

I would accept that. What the TSA does, in spite of its importance, is not that difficult to understand, and any additional ICE personnel would be supervised as well.

TSA searching protocols.

Girls with big alleged bosoms might really have explosives in disguise. Feel them to make sure they are real.

Any jewelry is a potential weapon, so must be confiscated.

Do not search people in Islamic garb, you bigot. That’s profiling and Islamophobia. Just wave them through. What could go wrong.

Anyone who gives you a dirty look might be a terrorist. Make them take their shoes off, dump the contents of their carry-on onto the counter, and accidentally drop stuff on the floor. The dirtier the look they give you, the more suspicious they are, so pile on with more invasive searches.

Remember Entebbe. Jooos! keep showing up on flights that get hijacked. Suspicious? A pattern? I don’t know. Ask Nitsy. But just to be safe, follow the last-described procedure.

They are merely doing non-specialized functions, contributing manpower, for those tasks they are pretty much interchangeable with TSA, they are already a trained part of the bigger machine and they are not taking over the specialized jobs that require the specialized training.

For the basic tasks just being trained and organized already is sufficient for helping, which is why the National Guard can bring needed manpower support to so many varying elements of America when bodies are needed, they are disciplined, vetted, regimented, organized people who know how to operate as a team, give them simple tasks and free up your own people for the important stuff.

My memory is not as it should be at times, but were we not told it takes months to train TSA replacements?

Apparently, if published articles are to be believed, the ICE agents already deployed to several large airports are VERY effective!

HST, Democrats need to be punished daily for THEIR shutdown!

The FIRST duty of EVERY public servant is to protect Americans!

Another anti admin story from a dubious “news” source. FR is getting flooded with these. I’m tinking all of these so called news outlets are part of a well funded propaganda op.

The details of how to operate the luggage scanners is probably new to them.
The procedures on what to do when something strange is discovered is also new to them.
The rest is just the basics ICE is already trained to execute.

It takes time to go through sensitivity training and critical race theory lectures. Since math is racist, filling out a time card will have to include a lot of pictures and cannot include cursive.

When you don’t hire on merit it takes much more training.

The Babylon Bee had an article that stated that Chic Filet replaced the TSA and had everyone through the line in minutes.

The thing is that is probably truthful. IF you put a private company in charge that was not worried about being politically correct or employing the right people it would be more efficient.
Virtually every function that government takes over is FUBAR.

How much training is needed to look distracted, call for a lunch break or sneer at people as they walk by?

TSA starts by hiring some totally unqualified people. It takes 6 months to train those people so everyone has to get 6 months of training. Some of the people they hire pick it up quickly and don't need that much training but the Government says 6 months.

ICE agents are overqualified for TSA work and don't need anywhere near 6 months.
