When a beloved Texas elementary school crossing guard’s car broke down, a selfless group of dads rallied to raise nearly $7,000 in less than a week to buy her a new one.
Moss Haven Elementary School crossing guard Trecia Crawford had trouble getting to work after her car stopped running in October. She was forced to start commuting to work by Lyft, and later by bus when she “ran out of money.”
Despite her woes, Crawford carried on with a smile.
“I had to do what I had to do,” she told KTVT.
Not everyone knew about Crawford’s transportation troubles.
So when the Dallas-area school’s dads club found out, they quietly launched a campaign to buy her new wheels — and raised $6,800 in less than a week, according to a blog post by the Richardson Independent School District. The dads club, whose members endeavor to “better the students and the teachers’ environments,” work closely with Crawford “to make sure everything’s running smoothly” in the mornings, parent Luke Wagner explained to the outlet. *** Tharp, as the general manager of a local auto repair shop, was able to sell a white Jeep “at a significant discount” and promised a few free oil changes to boot. The leftover funds were used to cover Crawford’s car insurance, the blog said.***

Well Done, guys....
Nice. I hope she can afford the insurance and all that goes with a new vehicle.
They paid for her insurance. (See the last sentence in the original post)
Very nice. I think that was generous.
Well, at least she doesn’t need to worry about paying
Gift Taxes. I don’t think there are any Federal Taxes, when no individual has given $19K each or less. Texas does not have a State imposed Gift Tax at all, unless that has recently changed.
A dependable car or pick up is just about the number one money problem and getting to work problem among the working poor, it is always problems with the car, always and forever, the vehicle.
If I were rich I would keep my ears open for such situations, or if billionaire rich I might even hire a regular Joe I could trust to visit the trailer parks and apartment complexes to find deserving souls in need of a little economy car or a simple truck for their little one man business.
Gift taxes are paid by the donor, not the recipient.
I believe the gift exemption is still $19,000/year. Thats way above $7,000! But my question is what kind of Jeep can you get for $7,000? My bet is within six months it will be broke down.
A 2% Inflation totally sucks over the years…,
Probably. Part of the problem with the ‘poor’ and cars is they don’t do the upkeep on them because it’s expensive. Then when they’re broke they are waiting on the money to fix them.
Good news, you got a free car! Bad news. It’s a Jeep and will probably break down in 30,000, MI and you’ll need a car anyway.
