Oil prices slide as Iran opts for 'porous' Strait of Hormuz

Oil prices fell back near $95 a barrel in U.S. futures markets Monday as Iran's Straight of Hormuz strategy became clearer, with the hard-line regime allowing passage of ships bound for Pakistan, India and China. The pullback in oil prices is allowing the S&P 500 to rally on Monday morning even as the U.S. struggles to find partners for an effort to guarantee safe passage through the key shipping route.

A massive oil-price shock isn't in Iran's interest, BCA Research Chief Strategist Felix-Antoine Vezina-Poirier wrote in a Friday analysis. "A 'porous' Hormuz implies Tehran is signaling resolve without provoking its partners," he wrote. Fully closing the Strait could invite a multinational effort to reopen the passage, he said.

"Tehran's "sweet spot," he said, is causing enough of a crisis for the U.S. and its partners to deter future regime-change attempts, without causing "maximum disruption" that makes Iran's actions untenable."

The pearls, unclutch them. You know who you are.

back a few “Iranian” missiles to fly from the shores of Iran and burn a few Chinese oil tankers. Plausible deniability.

“Iran’s Straight of Hormuz strategy became clearer”

Iran has no strategy.

Who are our ‘partners’? I’m only aware of one and that’s Israel.

The stratagem appears to be “pretend we control the Strait of Hormuz, when in fact we’re almost out of weapons ...”

More than that - the USA (and Israel) do NOT use oil from the Persian Gulf.

But the EU and China do!

And Iran wants to supply its allies, and it needs the money. That’s why “some oil is getting through.”

The USA is an oil exporter and has energy independence. We’ve also switched Venezuela to our side. Sorry, EU/China - do not come looking for energy in the Western Hemisphere, unless you deal with us!

So now Iran, China and the EU are all in a tight spot.

Its actually in the USA’s interest to make sure the Straights of Hormuz remain tense.

I am amazed at the lack of shame the writers of such tripe display in these “news articles”

Iran has “opted” to not attack certain shipping, just happens to be the massive majority of oil shipping that passes.

These people are so full of themselves.

Let the nations who buy the Hormuz oil keep the Straight open.

“Iran opts for ‘porous’ Strait of Hormuz”

This sounds like it is their choice. It reminds me of the way the Soviet Union decided to collapse, and Germany and Japan decided to surrender in WWII.

Give it time. Iran will opt for an open Strait of Hormuz.

Who is “Iran”? I mean, who decides this? They’re dead. There’s no coherent leadership. And as if they’re able to do anything at this point...by the moment they’re less and less likely to be able to do anything to anyone.

China would know it was us, even if they couldn't prove it.

So you want to provoke a war with China?

Not enough wars on our plate for you?

Sorry bud, China is sh*tting its pants now after we dismantled their military technology. If we shut the Straight of Hormuz to China while it’s closed for everybody, they’ll just have to sit and take it.
