Detroit Diesel, a manufacturer of diesel engines and axles in Detroit, has announced the addition of a third shift, the recall of laid-off workers, and the hiring of dozens more, in response to strategic tariff pressures.
In October, after months of lobbying, the federal government imposed a 25 percent tariff on heavy truck imports to prevent further offshoring and drive investment in the US heavy truck industry. The move is the latest win for UAW members in the union’s fight for reshoring and reinvesting in good union jobs.
“Strategic, targeted tariffs are an important tool in the toolbox to undo the damage of our free trade disaster and bring back good union jobs to the U.S.,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. “Companies like Detroit Diesel, and their parent company Daimler Truck North America, need to step up to reinvest in the workers who make the product and stop laying off American workers while making billions in profit. We applaud this first step in the right direction.”

Before I retired, the company I worked for made components for oil pumps manufactured by Detroit Diesel. Some of the components I worked on went into fire trucks for the NYFD that replaced fire trucks destroyed in New York City on 9/11. We manufactured a LOT of those pump shafts. I’m sure they still do.
Of course, the UAW claims credit.
Of course. But they still are going against the Dem party line when it comes to the interests of their membership.
Not a fan of unions myself, but I'll admit when they somehow manage to do the right thing.
Detroit Diesel? I guess they must mean mtu.
The “Left” - supposedly the guardians of the “little guy” - have always been on the side of protective tariffs.
It used to be the signature of the Democrat party.
Now they’re Taft Repubicans? They hate Smoot-Hawley?
Ridiculous. They’re only against it because it’s Trump.
I remember when the Democrats hated China and wanted tariffs on Chinese goods. It was the Bushie Republicans that loved China.
DDC.
I drove for the Alpha Beta grocery chain in the late 70s. At 22, I was the youngest of the 300 drivers they employed.
Their fleet consisted of old GMC cabovers running "Screaming Jimmy" 2-stroke Detroits. The power band on those suckers was 1800 - 2100 RPM, meaning the driver was continuously shifting gears.
The tractors lacked power steering, so I developed arms like Popeye.
Yeah.
And the unstated reason the Bush gang went to China was to break the unions.
What we are seeing now is some sort of insane inversion of both parties.
Trump’s platform is nationalist: it’s a fusion of the pro-national aspects of both parties. That’s why he has broad appeal.
And why they ALL hate him. So they end up taking absurd positions that contradict all of their past positions.
You could always hear a GMC Astro coming from a mile away.
Astro - I had forgotten the model name.
