Panic in the Falkland Islands as food runs out - 'can't remember what fruit looks like'

People on the Falkland Islands have said they have forgotten what fresh food looks like with a crucial shipment of supplies delayed. Residents are waiting for the latest supply vessel to arrive from Uruguay, which usually lands every four to five weeks, but there has not been one for three months. It is thought that the boat will arrive on Saturday, March 8.

There is a shortage of fresh fruit, vegetables and processed bread, as well as “no cheese”. The shipments are done via Uruguay because Argentina “wouldn’t allow them”. Cathy Jacobson, 67, originally from Southampton, runs the Victory Bar pub with her husband Alistair. She said: “It’s been a nightmare. The February one is supposed to have been in... we’ve run out of sweets, we’ve run out of flour. We’re nearly out of fish.”

The venue has also had to stop selling burgers, as minced meat is not available to buy. Scampi is also off the menu, and customers are not even able to enjoy bread and butter. The pub’s supply of sugar has been depleted, too. “You name it, we’ve run out of it," Ms Jacobson added.

"We haven’t had a supply ship since last year,” Mr Jacobson said. “Our regular supply ship has gone into dry dock in Montevideo - they come across lots of different problems. It’s been there for most of the year so far.”

Coleen Biggs, 75, called the situation “infuriating”. “We’ve forgotten what fresh fruit looks like,” she added. “My sister brought me four peaches the other day, which she grows in her greenhouse. I felt very privileged. They’re all gone, mind you.”

The flow of goods is usually more consistent, with the MV Unispirit, which operates under the South American Atlantic Service (SAAS) to Port Stanley, ensuring the island is stocked up.

Why won’t Argentina allow the Falklands to receive shipments of their food?
That whole region of the globe almost never crosses my mind for any reason.

What a perfect time for Argentina to take back the Falklands.

UK Prime Minister - Keir Starmer - will not do any thing to stop them.

I suspect most on the Falklands Islands have a stock of food to last a year or more. It is only prudent if you live in a place where the supply chain is easily disrupted.

They have a very low crime rate, and a very high gun ownership rate. There is a fair amount of game to hunt, and they have many thousands of sheep.

They will not go hungry.

Saturday, March 8

I think that identifies the root problem. Looking at calendars, the next Saturday, March 8 won't be until 2031. The British hope to have a ship that works by then.

Argentina still claims the islands. The Falkland war was all about who owned the islands.

Pretty dumb to live there without at least 1 years worth of stockpiled food and other supplies.

I guess some people have to learn the hard way.

“Whilst we appreciate that some members of the community are feeling anxious regarding the delay and its impacts, we would like to ask for your patience and that you refrain from stockpiling items beyond your reasonable short- to medium-term needs,” the Assembly added.

And with this whisper, so ends the once magnificent British Empire. They stopped having children, fell into socialism, discarded their military, imported the most unruly indigenous people from their former colonies, and faded into obscurity.

I see. Unlike America, Argentina does not seem particularly concerned about providing Humanitarian Aid.
That’s often just another form of diplomacy, if the stronger country knows how to play it.

It’s only a matter of time before Argentina will seize the Falklands.

Starmer might write a letter of protest. But it wouldn’t be too strongly worded. That would be racist. Or something.

You’d think somebody could charter a “banana boat” or other such small freighter, load it full of groceries and turn a tidy profit.

The UK is utterly hopeless. But, it’s what they’ve voted for for the past 30 + years so suck on it Brits, you’ve earned it.

Argentina wants the Falkland islands,,, the value is in a military base...I would not be surprised if there was a back room deal that delayed supply shipments
