Targeted by lawsuits and demonized, Big Oil signals it’s had enough with fight against California AG

When California Attorney General Rob Bonta set out to sue ExxonMobil, alleging deception in its claims about advanced plastics recycling, he probably didn't expect the company would sue him for defamation. Bonta tried to get the case dismissed, but a federal judge in Texas has given the lawsuit the green light to proceed.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta hoped to earn his anti-fossil fuel credentials when he filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil in 2024, alleging the company was engaging in deceptive practices related to its “advanced recycling” program.

He probably didn’t expect that the company would fight back the way it has.

For years, oil companies have been the target of vitriol and lawfare, especially in California. When California’s gasoline prices spiked in the summer of 2022, Gov. Gavin Newsom claimed refineries were “price gouging,” even though his own energy officials disputed the claim. Newsom signed legislation requiring the refineries to be transparent so that the alleged price gouging could be revealed, but in fact no evidence of gouging was ever found.

[snip]

Bonta had sought to get the lawsuit dismissed, arguing that the statements Exxon claims were defamatory were made in the course of his duties as attorney general, and that should grant him immunity from lawsuits. A federal judge earlier this month disagreed and ruled that Exxon could proceed with its case against Bonta.

Excellent. It's about time that companies start fighting back against California's foolishness.

Yaa and just think about that AG’s comment. Basically, he wanted it dismissed because he believes he has the right to defame and insult you because he was part of the government.

He believes he had the right to lie about something when it was to get them prosecuted. Says everything about the dems.

As usual, consumers in California will pay the price for these idiots’ (Bonta, Newom) war on Big Oil:

National Average Price for a Gallon of Gas: $2.98

Average Price of a gallon of gas in California: $4.62

Bonta and Newsom do not care. Any gas they need for their limos (Newsom travels in a caravan of three, with his in the middle) is paid for by California taxpayers.

I wish they would fight back by putting the tax burden and regulatory burden on every receipt. I usually only ever see sales tax and sometimes thats not even there.

(Yeah, maybe a little hard to do for big oil but retailers can easily do it)

Big oil SIGNALS? Why don’t they just say it? Cowardly or just woke like the others?

>> Bonta and Newsom do not care.

Worse than that — to Bonta and Newsome, outrageous fuel prices aren’t a bug, they’re a FEATURE! Because Gaia has a fever don’t you know.

The Republicans have a ton of ammunition on this idiot (Newsom) when he runs for POTUS in 2028 - including overt racism towards blacks.

Will they use it?

If he is elected POTUS, Bonta will be either his Chief of Staff or Secretary of State - and he’ll make sure $4.60 gas is nationwide.

Absolutely. I live in California!

Republicans have a ton of ammunition on this idiot (Newsom), his failed green “policies,” even the gift he gave them of overt racism against blacks caught right on video.

Will they use it when he runs for POTUS in 2028?

Democrats hate Republicans so much, they’ll surely vote for Newsom, along with idiot Republicans who want to “punish” the Republican party - along with all the illegals, absentee ballots, thousands of late-night ballots dropped off at polling places, ballots run repeatedly through voting machines...

The bottom line with most plastics is that instead of "recycling" for which they are not particularly suited, we should be burning it as fuel for electrical power. The sellers of natural gas don't like that. California is a regulatory captive of the oil and gas business as represented by the Natural Resource Defense Council. Said "industry" has been the prime actor in the "climate change" scam. It was the Rockefeller Brothers who organized the Environmental Grantmakers Association that seeded academic money to generate its supporting thesis. I have yet to see an "environmental" policy in this State that did not mandate consumption of more oil and gas. As it is now, we are capturing, piping, and utilizing carbon dioxide as a fracking fluid, at least partially subsidized by "carbon credit" taxes. We are literally paying oil companies to drill.

I've been writing upon occasion about this crap for almost 30 years. I'm dead tired of it. It sickens me to see the oceans despoiled in the name of "recycling" when we truck, sort, sell, and ship our garbage to China, then to become microplastics infusing everything. It has to stop. Carbon dioxide may make a great fracking fluid, but its worth needs to be established in an honest market. I designed and patented such a market. Then I quitclaimed it back to the American people, in part because I couldn't afford the lawyers to defend it. Anthropogenic atmospheric carbon dioxide has its benefits and its problems. A good example is increased agricultural production versus more rapidly accruing fuels that threaten our cities with fire and destroy biodiversity. Those problems and their countervailing technical issues MUST be managed honestly and (as I published 25 years ago), market competition is the way to do that. I just wish I could get through to guys like Zinke and teach him and his people about our Wildergarten project, as there is a LOT more than simply reducing damage to be accomplished in making a more productive planet. It would make the arduous work I've done at least worth while and at least partially fulfill my obligations to G_d. There is a new industry to be had making a better world, one that is virtually immune to AI and robotics. It's beyond past time that we hold the left accountable for the environmental damage they have done and realize how much we all have yet to learn in making a more vital world.

I could be wrong, but IMHO...
Yes, considering who we’re probably dealing with for (R) candidates in the 2028 nomination, I think they’ll make extensive use of it. I don’t think Newscum is even a lock to win the ‘Rat primary.

That "immunity" is part of the problem. That whole concept needs to be seriously revisited and revised. Public servants need to be answerable to We the People, who pay their salaries and whom they supposedly serve.

“In 2024, Energy Transfer Partners successfully sued Greenpeace, and a North Dakota jury found the group at fault for harming the pipeline company’s reputation by publishing false statements during the 2016 protests over the North Dakota Access pipeline. North Dakota Judge James Gion set a settlement amount at $345 million, which was reduced from the jury’s original amount, and the Associated Press reports that he intends to make Greenpeace pay up.”

Yay for my largest and longest holding, ET! 7.2% dividend and they move product and maintain infrastructure, they don’t produce it, so oil price movements don’t matter much to them. Enbridge (ENB) is another good one, Buffet likes it.

I believe JD Vance - and certainly DeSantis will if DeSantis goes national.

One of the entertainment highlights of last year was the Newsom/DeSantis debate - especially when DeSantis pulled out the poop map of San Francisco - where Newsom was mayor for years. Newsom’s wife had to drag him off the stage and stop the “debate” during the commercial break b/c he’d made such a fool of himself.

You’d think Newsom would have learned - but then as he himself brags - he’s got a 93 IQ and can’t read.

Yes. If it weren’t for elderly relatives, my kids and grandkids - and that my entire family is buried here, I’d leave.

Can’t leave those things, as difficult as it is...

The oil companies need to leave lock, stock and barrel as in take everything, and what they can’t take, burn.

Leave nothing for those leftist thieves.

Exxon took its cue from Chevron and its fight against the commie trash suing them in Venezuela. They won.

EM has mebbe grown some balls and is willing to go after the INDIVIDUALS who cause this turmoil — that is the only way to restore justice — get the individuals.
