Cuba’s coastguard shot dead four people and injured six others travelling in a U.S.-registered speedboat in an exchange of fire off the Cuban coast on Wednesday, the interior ministry in Havana said.
The “illegal” Florida-registered boat was detected one nautical mile from Falcones Cay in Villa Clara province, the ministry said in a brief statement.
As a coastguard vessel approached to identify the boat “shots were fired from the boat,” injuring the commander of the Cuban vessel, the ministry added.
“As a result of the clash, at the time of this report, on the foreign side, four aggressors were killed and six others were wounded,” the ministry said, adding that the injured were evacuated and received medical assistance.
The ministry said that it remained committed to “protecting its territorial waters.”
The firefight comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and the communist island, which lies just 100 miles (160 kilometres) across the Florida Straits.
It came as Washington softened a virtual oil siege of the island imposed by President Donald Trump in January after the U.S. ouster of top Cuba ally, Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela.
Before Maduro’s capture by U.S. forces on January 3, Cuba had relied on Venezuela for about half its fuel needs.
Faced with an outcry from Caribbean leaders, worried that starving Cuba of oil would cause the economy to quickly collapse, Washington said it would allow shipments of Venezuelan oil for “commercial and humanitarian use.”

An “exchange” of gunfire?
So the US boat was firing on the Cuban Coast Guard?
Yeah, Cuba should fire back.
A lot of words, but not much information.
If true sounds like a cartel craft that did not have the correct identification signals or a cartel guy who failed to make his payoff. Also wonder if it was a craft of that leftist flotilla bringing “aid” to Cuba and thought they were being stopped by the US Coast Guard.
The article only creates questions. Nothing really about what happened.
There is a whole lot missing.
Looks like it’s time to shoot up some Cuban “coast guard” boats.
‘Apocalypse NOW’
.
Not very smart to fire upon a coast guard vessel.
Yeah, Cuba should fire back.

Chris Rock might say 'If you don't want to get shot, don't start shooting at any country's military on their turf!'
2 possibilities in my mind. One, this was drug runners who thought they could take on Cuban coast guard or two, the Cubans are lying and they shot up some pleasure boat. If the person who wrote this article actually practiced journalism we might get some details on the speedboat, what kind of vessels are common in the area and for what purpose, or anything that might explain why there was a gunfight.
Pretty damn dumb, actually ... USGC would have had the same response.
I am, though, curious as to who these jokers are (were) ... I bet they weren't just innocent Americans out for a three-hour cruise.
Absolutely! We would do the same
Maybe it WAS the commie flotilla, I don’t know.
Correct.
Exactly.
That's pretty meaningless and does not justify the hype of the headline that make it seem like Cuba just fired on a US ship. The boat could have been running drugs or stolen. The US military certainly didn't sail into Cuban waters and start firing on a Cuban government ship. The only realistic scenario where a private speedboat would initiate gunfire against the Cuban coast guard is if it was running drugs or some other illegal activity.
After all, the Cuban commies started it.
One more potential- there were 4 dead 6 wounded. Total of 10 people on board.
Maybe more. One mile offshore.
I think maybe they (the US registered boat) were smuggling some
people out of Cuba and got caught leaving after the pickup.
Looks like it’s time to shoot up some Cuban “coast guard” boats.

Why? From the article it appears that the Cuban coast guard was doing its job in Cuban waters.
