Big Tech's data center build-out is facing mounting resistance from lawmakers.
This week, Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) introduced the first bipartisan bill in Congress designed to prevent data center power usage from affecting consumers' electric bills.
A week earlier, on Feb. 6, New York became at least the sixth state to have its legislators propose a bill to pause data center construction within state lines. This legislation would effectively shut out New York as a potential site for new data centers if it passes.

Hell, Russia would probably build each of them their own nuke plant.
And nuclear power is the only answer.
That, too, won't happen here on a sufficient scale.
The problem isn’t “data centers” - its bloated, leftist bureaucracy and stupid and inefficient green energy policies crammed down the throat of America for the last 20 years.
Anyway, I am really looking forward to the AI crash, I am tired of not being able to afford RAM or a graphics card.
Time to bring back King Coal as an electric producer.
Some would say use abundant cheap coal, modern, clean technology, scrap hindering, destroy America regulations and simply build the power plants you need. Others will say NO! A choice must be made.
Yup, the ram prices are crazy
Just require them to build their own power plants. They can sell any excess to the public grid.
FACT!
I cringe when I see the term ‘lawmakers’.
Makes our criminal politicians sound almost dignified.
“Just require them to build their own power plants. They can sell any excess to the public grid.”
You’re spot on. It’s not a complicated problem to solve.
Water can be solved by requiring cooling systems to be closed loop.
Hey, AI needs all the power it can get and then some ... normal everyday citizens just don’t count.
And just why is AI needed?
Replacing human brains with computers is a good thing?
There is...from the sun.
That's why Musk is hard at work working on building data centers in orbit using solar power for electricity.
“Replacing human brains with computers is a good thing?”
Obviously yes.
I had 32GB in a cart a few months ago (NewEgg), ready to buy, but then had to run out on a family errand. When I got back and tried to check out, got an error. Went to re-load the cart and the prices had literally DOUBLED.
Yeah, if only we had said "ok, we'll let you have illegal alien workers on your farm/factory, but you have to pay 100% of their future education, welfare, healthcare and housing costs for which they might otherwise qualify for public assistance" - no way the mega-corporations would have agreed.
Data centers in space is not the panacea that people think it is. The Stefan-Boltzmann Law is a huge obstacle, as in a vacuum standard convection does not work. It is HARDER to keep data center satellites cooler - plus the solar radiation will make them even hotter.
More proof AI is RIP.
Think about that for a minute, granted Musk has cost huge advantage by using SpaceX to put stuff in orbit, but how would this make economic sense when it costs 5.6M for 800kg ?
What do you think a data center will weigh ?
And then there is latency, the data center would need to be in low earth orbit to minimize latency, do you really think having a fleet of relatively massive satellite/datacenters looming overhead is wise ?
Nuclear power via small scale package plants to power the Data Center and keep it wholly off the consumer grid.
WATER IS ALSO AN ISSUE.
DATA CENTERS TEND TO GRAVITATE TOWARDS RURAL AREAS— CAN INTIMIDATE THE LOCAL POLITICIANS & GET APPROVALS....
MANY RURAL AREAS ARE TOTALLY DEPENDENT ON AQUIFERS...
DATA CENTERS USE TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF WATER)__NOT RECYCLED-—INTO THE AIR.
