Victor Davis Hanson RETURNS: Surgery, Cancer Battle, and Minnesota's ‘Hypocritical Insurrectionists’
The Daily Signal and Victor Davis Hanson ^ | Feb 5 2026 | Victor Davis Hanson

here is “no coherent principle” to the left’s ongoing “utterly hypocritical” “insurrectionary movement” in Minnesota, argues Daily Signal senior contributor Victor Davis Hanson in his first post-surgery video appearance.

Nearly five years ago, these same people lambasted Ashli Babbitt, an unarmed 14-year Air Force veteran who was shot and killed by the U.S. Capitol Police on Jan. 6, 2021.

The left cheered as hundreds of demonstrators were arrested for allegedly assaulting officers and carrying firearms.

Meanwhile, they said it was perfectly OK for somebody like Alex Pretti “to go to a demonstration with a military-grade semiautomatic weapon, with extra clips, and just stick it in his waistband, visible sight of anybody, and then get into a brawl with law enforcement officers,” Hanson continues.

“All of our most prominent liberals are saying the state of Minnesota has a right to do what? Occupy federal property? Attack federal officers? Prevent the enforcement of federal law? I thought the left didn’t like states’ rights. I thought they said that this was ‘insurrectionary.’”

Victor Davis Hanson didn’t smoke but developed lung cancer. So I looked up his bio.for risk factors. He lived in the same house he grew up in (!) and the fifth generation of his family to live there. That’s on old house full of toxic chemicals !

Old houses are full of toxic chemicals?

Houses which were built before 1940? Who knew!

The house was built in the 1870s. A modern kitchen was added in the 1940s.

It appears another bathroom was added about 1980.

Hanson mentions his genetics is predisposed for the type of cancer he experienced.

Didn’t realize that old houses would be full of toxic chemicals. My home was built in 1974; I bought it used in 1977. What are my odds on the toxic chemicals?

Well, for two, asbestos-containing building materials (excellent for fireproofing; not so good for health when it becomes friable from damage) was widely used until the early 1980s, and lead-based/lead-containing paint that was widely used prior to 1978.

I was being sarcastic.Should have put the /S indicator in the post.

Old houses might have lead paint or asbestos insualtion.

The biggest problem with old houses is they are drafty, poorly insulated, and harder to live in. Many have narrow stairs which are difficult to navigate. They often have more problems with pests including insects of all kinds.

I am generally skeptical of the whole “toxic chemicals” scaremongering, but lead paint can be a danger to children, most asbestos is harmless in most situations.

Tripping an falling is probably the biggest danger.

Also lives in farm country…where many potent chemicals were used to get rid of bugs and weeds.

The house must have had lots of upgrades over the decades. Lead pipes, lead paint, asbestos roof..etc etc.

He has also referred to farming his property. Hope he didn't use RoundUp back in the day.

Glad to see VDH back.

BTW, he’s been doing teaching gigs at my alma mater the past several years. (Before him, we had Russell Kirk.)
